THEODORA "Teddy" CARRAS(1924 - 2018)

CARRAS Theodora Tsoucalas Carras "Teddy" Passed away peacefully at 5:53 p.m. on Friday September 7, 2018 at Homewood at Crumland Farms in the care of Hospice of Frederick County. Her three children and her younger sister were at her bedside. One of five children of George and Maria (Monogenis) Tsoucalas, Teddy was born on November 19, 1924 in New York City. Her parents had immigrated from Nysiros, part of the Dodecanese Islands in Greece. Teddy often shared wonderful memories of her childhood in which her mother would sit with relatives and friends along Riverside Drive talking into the evening as the children played, and her extended family would spend much of the summer at the seashore in Long Beach (NY). After graduating from high school, Teddy worked at the restaurant her father owned for 40 years, Le Petit Paris at Broadway and 145th Street. The patrons loved her delightful, warm personality. Teddy met her future husband, Andrew "Andy" Carras, at a Greek dance and they were married in 1955. Soon thereafter they moved to the Washington, DC area where, in Silver Spring, Maryland, they would raise three children. Teddy became a member of Saint Sophia Greek Orthodox Cathedral of Washington DC and was actively involved in the Daughters of Penelope and the Philoptochos Society. Teddy retired from the National Institutes of Health (NIH) where she had a rewarding career as an accountant. She enjoyed painting, playing bridge, music, singing (she had a beautiful voice), dancing (especially Greek dances and the jitterbug), crossword puzzles, and more than anything, spending time with her children and grandchildren. She raised and showed three generations of Siberian Huskies and enjoyed horseback riding in her youth. Teddy is predeceased by her loving husband Andy, her sister Calliope (Tsoucalas) Caravakis, and her brothers, Michael Tsoucalas and Judge Nicholas Tsoucalas. She is survived by her sister, Athena (Tsoucalas) Hazlaris; her three children, six grandchildren and great grandson: Nicholas Andrew Carras (Marie) and their children Deena Carras Mitchell (Rob) and Andrea Carras Rohm (Kevin) and grandchild Theodore "Teddy" Mitchell who affectionately knew his great grandmother as Big Yia Yia; George Andrew Carras (Susan) and their children Andrew John Carras and Abigail Debra Carras; and Valerie Carras Olague (Rick) and their children Gabriella Nicole Olague and Alexander Lee Olague. She is also survived by many loving nephews, nieces and cousins and by her brother-in-law Chris Maragakes and sister-in-law Helen Tsoucalas. A visitation and viewing will be held at Pumphrey Funeral Home, located at 7557 Wisconsin Avenue, Bethesda MD, on Tuesday evening, September 11, 2018 between 6 p.m. and 8 p.m. Funeral services will be held at St. Sophia Greek Orthodox Cathedral, located at 2815 36th St, NW Washington DC, on Wednesday morning, September 12, 2018 at 11 a.m., with interment to follow at Gate of Heaven Cemetery located at 13801 Georgia Avenue, Silver Spring MD.
