THOMAS J. O'CONNOR (Age 92)  

Passed away peacefully on September 3, 2018 at his home in Springfield, VA attended by his loving wife of 68 years, Alice. Tom was born in St. Joseph, Missouri on June 11, 1926 and spent his youth in Kansas City, Missouri where he graduated from Rockhurst High School. He attended the United States Naval Academy and graduated with distinction in 1947 (a member of the Class of 1948A). He served with distinction for 27 years in various fleet and logistics assignments retiring as a Captain in the Navy Supply Corps. He received his MBA degree at Harvard (1956) and PHD at Stanford University (1965) while in the Navy. Following retirement from the Navy, Tom served eight years in the Senior Executive Service with the Department of Housing and Urban Development (1974-1982) directing financial and accounting operations. In 1982, he commenced a third career in academia where he was a professor at The American University that lasted 16 years, culminating with his time as the acting Dean of the Business School. Tom has been a long time resident of Hayfield (1965-2018) in Alexandria, and been very active in community and Fairfax County affairs, St. Lawrence Catholic Church and Little Theatre of Alexandria. Tom is predeceased by his parents, two brothers and a sister and is survived by his wife Alice and nine children, 23 grandchildren and one great grandson. Family and friends are invited to call at Jefferson Funeral Chapel, 5755 Castlewellan Drive, Alexandria, VA on Thursday September 6, 2018 from 6 to 9 p.m. for a visitation. A Mass of Christian burial will be held at St. Lawrence Catholic Church on Friday September 7, 2018 at 11 a.m. Interment Arlington National Cemetery at a later date.
