McCLAIN, MAJOR WILLIAM ALBERT (Age 83)

Major William Albert McClain of Norcross, GA, died Thursday, October 21, 2004. Graveside services with full military honors will be held 11 a.m., December 3, 2004 at Arlington National Cemetery in Virginia. Mr. McClain was a retired Army veteran having served in WWII and the Korean Conflict. He enlisted in 1940 with the 34th Infantry Division in WWII and served with the Eighth Calvary Regiment in Korea. His company was the first to cross the 38th parallel heading north into Korea. He was the last remaining officer from his Battalion to be captured by the Chinese on November 5, 1950 where he spent 34 months as a Prisoner of War in camps near the Yalu River in North Korea. His military awards include the Silver Star, Bronze Star, Purple Heart, and the Army Commendation Medal along with the Combat Infantry Badge with Star. His unit was awarded the Presidential Unit Citation for their fighting in North Korea. He also had eight battle stars for the different campaigns fought both in WWII and Korea. After retiring from the military, he was employed by the Central Intelligence Agency until 1980. He was preceded in death by his wife, Elizabeth (Betty); his daughter, Betty Ann; son, Roger; his parents, Eldon and Olive McClain of Youngstown, OH and brothers, Joe and Gene McClain. He is survived by his son and daughter-in-law, William (Bill) Joseph McClain and Michele of Alpharetta, GA; brother, Jack O. McClain of Youngstown, OH; granddaughter, Shelly McClain; grandson, William Ryan McClain; his close friend and companion of several years, Catherine Elliott, along with numerous cousins, nieces and nephews. In lieu of flowers, donations are asked to be made to the AXPOW National Headquarters, 3201 E. Pioneer Pkwy., Suite 40, Arlington, VA 76010.
