A GREAT MAN. FAMILY MAN, LEADER AND CHIEF MISS YOU

I loved dogs as it appears Roy did too!

I only knew Roy through his unflagging duty and protection of the Chevy Chase Village itself. Meeting him occasionally through his care of those close friends of mine who I loved for decades living in 'Roy's Village' as I came to know it and feel it was. Gradually I learned what a remarkable man he was and he too became my friend. Lucky me. A man whose gentle command of humanity in all its forms came upon you quietly. A man whose sense of honor needed no titles or framed awards. It naturally came forth each day to shine through his every action and every spoken word. A man who I am deeply thankful to say I have known in my lifetime. Other than my family who I will miss always -- there are two people in my life that I would have signed over years of my own life to give them more time to walk this earth. The first is a world famous artist for children's books; brilliant in her art and her humanity not unlike Roy's gentle soul -- Trina Schart Hyman was my friend. An artist whose own beautiful younger sister died of the same form of cancer that took Chief Roy Gordon. Trina, herself, died of Breast Cancer in November 2004. Now Roy has left far too early. It is with a sense of helpless anguish that I truthfully wish with all my heart I could have given him some of my own time -- to have another year at least to be with all who have richly enjoyed and sincerely deserved his company. Roy I will miss your delicious common sense approach to life, but your laughing smile will remain with me. Thank you.

I got to know Roy when we worked together while assigned to the Silver Spring District of the Montgomery County Dept. of police in the 70's. I was a rookie fresh out of the police academy and found Roy to be an excelent police officer & mentor, but most importantly he was a great guy to be around. Roy was a Greenbay Packer fan and would always say "The Pack is Back"..........well Roy I'll be rooting for the Pack this Sunday just for you! May God bless you and your family. Condolences to the family. Roy and I worked together for several years in MCP/SOD. He was a true professional and always a gentleman.

I will miss Roy as a terrific tennis partner. He was the best and not just because he was a great tennis player. He was a coach, a mentor and good friend. I will miss going to eat after a match and having a beer with him. My husband and I enjoyed his stories of being a Police Chief and sharing his knowledge of traffic cameras. Now, everytime I see one of those cameras I will be one of those very rare drivers with a smile because I will be remembering Roy. Rest in peace, partner - Now, can I have that drop shot of yours?

Goodbye Old Friend. My memories of knowing you and working with you in the 1970's and 1980's are now all I've left. You will be remembered and missed by many of your old friends. (Tom Leonard, Silver Spring)

Our heartfelt condolences to the Gordon family. I have known Roy for many years and we shared much time competing with and against Roy on the tennis courts. Roy was a fun person to be with and a very determined competitor and doubles partner. I was fortunate to share a court with Roy at the 2008 Sr. Nationals in Indian Wells, CA. We had a great time together. He will be greatly missed. God Bless.
