PHILIP WILLIAMS Obituary

WILLIAMS Dr. Philip Karl Williams Dr. P.K.Williams was born on November 16, 1939 in Tulsa, Oklahoma to Dr. Philip and Mrs. Dorothy Williams. He passed away on January 19,2021. He completed his undergraduate work at Rice University which he attended on a full scholarship and majored in Physics. He then earned his Ph.D. at Indiana University in High Energy Physics. Afterward, he went to the University of Michigan where he was a Post Doctoral Fellow and an Associate Professor. In 1979, he started to work at the Department of Energy where he became Chief of the Physics Research Branch and then the Senior Program Officer. He managed about $100 million in High energy grants for the Department of Energy. He was Executive of the High Energy Physics Advisory Panel (HEPAP). He was the Executive Secretary of the US/Japan Committee on High Energy Physics, and was Chair of the Scientific Assessment Group for Experiments in Non Accelerator Physics. He was a Fellow in APS (The American Physics Society). In his earlier research, he developed the best model for fitting pi-pi scattering data using absorption that predates the quark model. The theoretical description was called the Williams Model. He published his other research before coming to the DOE. Because he was a very sensitive and kind person, he related well to everyone and was extremely well liked by all who knew him as a person of integrity. He loved sports and was very competitive whether he was playing tennis, racket ball, or golf. He was very knowledgeable about music and played the violin in his youth. He could always tell who was either singing flat or playing the wrong note in an orchestra. The love of his life was his best friend of 52 years, his wife, Sammye. He enjoyed most of the trips they were fortunate enough to be able to take. His favorite was being in Egypt. His three loving sons, David,Michael, and Philip were a wonderful support to him. He adored his grandchildren; his precious girls, Naomi and Eden and his very loving grandsons, Charlie, Oliver and MIles. He always looked forward to visiting with his daughter-in-laws, Dina and Laura. He was dearly loved by his siblings: Aggie and her husband, Bill Crowley, John and his wife,Patty, Clayt and his wife, Sue. They traveled from great distances to be with him. Their support was very much appreciated. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Parkinson Research Foundation at parkinsonhope.org in memory of P.K. PK was a friend and Professor during my graduate study at Florida State University. He joined the Department of Energy in the High Energy Physics Division during my time at the Office of Research when we were again to share our friendship. My condolences to Sammye.

PK was a wonderful man. Even though we were first cousins, I did not know PK and his siblings well because they were raised in Tulsa, Oklahoma and were a good bit older than I. I was glad he and his family moved to the Washington area so we could really get to know him, Sammye and the boys. One of my fondest recollections was about ten years ago when I underwent some personal difficulties, and PK and Sammye came from Maryland to Virginia to take me for a special brunch. It meant a great deal. I know that Sammye will continue to receive all the love and support of her sons, daughters-in-law and grandchildren. Sincere condolences and all the best.
