WILLIAM CARNEY Obituary

CARNEY William Carney "Bill" (Age 74) Passed away peacefully on May 23, 2017, at his home in Washington, DC., surrounded by his family. Bill was born July 1, 1942, in Brooklyn, NY, to Joseph and Sally Carney. He was a member of the Suffolk County Legislature from 1976 until he was elected to the United States House of Representatives, representing New York's First Congressional District from 1979 to 1987. He was proud to be a member of the New York State Conservative Party and the first Member of the U.S. House of Representatives elected as a registered Conservative Party member. Bill attended Florida State University and served in the United States Army Medical Corps. In April of 1965, he met the love of his life, Barbara Ann Haverlin. He proposed on May 14, 1965, and one year later, on May 14, 1966, they were married in Brooklyn, NY. Their two children, Jacqueline Ann and Julie Ann were born on Long Island. Bill was known for his quick sense of humor, his love of country, and his ability to make friends with people from all walks of life. He loved his family beyond measure and extended that love and generous spirit to his extended family and friends. He is preceded in death by his brothers, James and Joseph; sisters-in-law, Kathleen Kelly Carney and Maureen Carney Moore; as well as his brother-in-law Robert Emmett Haverlin. He will be lovingly remembered by his devoted wife, Barbara; his children, Jacqueline Ann (husband Stephen) D'Aquila of McLean, VA, and Julie Ann (husband Douglas) Baker of Bel Air, MD, as well as by his four grandchildren, who lit up his world: Stephen and Ryan D'Aquila, and Emily and Haley Baker. He is survived by his beloved sister, Roseanne (husband Brian) Branagan, of Niceville, FL, his brother-in-law (or "outlaw," as he liked to say) Wayne Moore of Warwick, RI, his sister-in-law, Beatrice Haverlin Moser of The Villages, Florida, and dozens of cousins, nieces, and nephews, all of whom will miss him greatly. Visitation will be held Monday, May 29, from 3 to 5 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. at Murphy Funeral Home, in Arlington, VA. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated in memory of Bill on Tuesday, May 30, at 10 a.m. at St. Peter's Catholic Church in Washington, DC. He will be buried in Arlington National Ceremony at a later date.
