Ronald Griffith Obituary

General Ronald H. Griffith  United States Army (Retired)
General (Retired) Ronald H. Griffith died in his sleep on July 18, 2018 at age 82, having established himself as one of America's most distinguished and accomplished soldier-statesmen.  During his military career, he rose from the rank of private to four star general, retiring after nearly 37 years of active duty service. Throughout his service to the nation, General Griffith commanded American soldiers at all levels - squad through division - in both peace and war. His military career culminated in his appointment by the President as the 26th Vice Chief of Staff of the Army - the second highest position of responsibility in America's senior service. He is survived by his wife, Dr. Hurdis M. Griffith, and by their two adult daughters, Leigh Ann Todd and Laura Thompson, and five grandchildren.  A viewing will be held on Friday, July 27 from 6 to 9 p.m. at the Demaine Funeral Home, 520 S. Washington St., Alexandria, VA. A memorial service will be held at Ft. Myer's Memorial Chapel on Saturday, July 28, 2018 at 10 a.m.  In lieu of flowers, gifts can be made to the National Museum of the United States Army, online at Armyhistory.org, or mailed to the Army Historical Foundation, 2425 Wilson Boulevard, Arlington, VA.

Like many others I had the privilege of serving under General Griffith's command in the 1st Armored Division. He always challenged us to achieve a high standard in all our duties. Later I worked with him once again at MPRI. He had a significant impact on my life. A great leader. A great American. I offer my sincere condolences to his family.

Psalm 90:10 says that the days of our years are 70 years, And if because of special mightiness they are 80 years. May the memories of the wonderful times you shared together bring a smile and joy in your heart.
