Today is 40 days that A.I. fell asleep perpetually.
They say that the human spirit lives while it is remembered. I hope that this Guest Book will be one source of support for the memory of A.I. and a permanent live for His Soul. I hope more people write about Him.

Below are the words which in Russian I wrote into the Guest Book for the day of His 88th birthday together with a photo. There is a photo, no words in Russian. Now I will try to repeat them in English. I wish we that could repeat some of these words again and again for many years to come:
Today, the 22nd of October, A.I. would have turned 88 years old. Exactly one month ago was his funeral. He was buried.
The love of his life were his children. By his natural he was a father. Every child (his and others) he treated like his own and he accepted each child as they were. As ill as he was, he always approached the child with his characteristic “Boodie, Boodie, Boodie”.
As fare as I was concerned , A.I. always repeated “I want to adopt you”. I am very proud that He called me his daughter, and all who saw us together didn’t doubt that fact.
Besides his children , A.I. loved guests. He hade so many at his home at 7516 Carroll Ave. If you came over, you would have to squeeze in between the rest of his guests.
Now this Guest Book is His virtual home. Like before, the doors to his home are open --- please come in.
Today in His home is a holiday. On the day of his 88th birthday I raise a goblet of red wine to Life, Life in the past, at the present and in the future, for Life, which A.I. willed us. Let’s joint together.

I will be happy to meet with everyone who has memories of A.I. and it is hard to fit them in the parameter of this page. Who knows, maybe together we can write another book about this interesting person, which He deserves.

On the photo are we in September, 2010

Dear Tamara, I am so sorry to hear of your loss. It is a very sad thing to loose one's father. My heart and prayers go out to you, and your family.

To the loved ones of Alex,
I was a friend and colleague of Alex for all these many years at NBS. We were in the Chemistry Building together, thus often crossed paths to talk about our lives. I am an immigrant, as he was, from Germany, so we could speak in German, of his years in Mainz.
I have the best memories of him, his passion for all aspects of life, his enthusiasm for his work and the people, his friends, around him. I can still vividly picture him, he in his white lab coat - for sure, passionately discussing a topic that had turned him on. These are the memories that count and will linger on forever.
I deeply share your grief and anguish over the passing of this extraordinary man. Please accept my condolences. You are all blessed to have had Alex at the core of your lives.

My Dearest Elena and Family,

How sadden I was to hear the news of your father’s passing.
My remembrance of him will always be that of a passionate man in everything he did. He loved his career as a chemist and would go on doing research. For years I would spend time at your parents house in the 70 and 80’s only to get into heavy discussions regarding history and in the process would get amazing lessons that I would only appreciate years later. I remember him initiating me as the “fifth” daughter and therefore had to dance the Polka with him. Before starting the dance he would always ask “did you take out your dance insurance?” I was never sure if I was still on the ground. Those days in your parents garden are forever ingrained in my memory.
He is finally at peace while his enthusiasm will remain here with all of us.

So sorry to hear about your father, Tamara. I think of your family, and in my mind, I am surrounded by memories of your house in Takoma Park, of pungent kitchen aromas, and a broad table laid with the most wonderful array of fresh vegetable, and things from the market, and rooms that seemed to me to be mysterious. I hear a muffled echo of strong Eastern European voices that at once thrilled and intimidated me. I treasure those memories, I wish I was there for you. Kathy Robb

Dear Fatiadi Family,

It is indeed a sad day for the family. but I also wanted you to know that is a sad day for those who were part of his NBS/NIST extended family. Alex was an outstanding and infectiously enthusiastic scientist. As a leading synthetic chemist, Alex devised numerous innovative ways to prepare new and difficult-to-obtain chemicals. He was always anxious to have the chemical properties of a new synthesis evaluated by his colleagues. His numerous scientific articles and reviews have contributed greatly to the fabric of science. Last week, I was looking for information on a compound in the 'Merck Index' - a summary of the properties of chemical compounds. Thumbing through the pages, the word 'A.J. Fatiadi' randomly caught my eye. He had provided synthesis and critical data on a substituted catechol. Although he may be lost to us in the flesh, our memories of his enthusiasm, friendship, and his contribution to science live on.
