BONNIE MATHIESON Obituary

BONNIE JEAN MATHIESON, PhD
Born May 10, 1945 of Kensington, MD, passed away suddenly on Monday, January 8, 2018. She was the wife of 51 years to Donald Mathieson; loving mother to Daniel (Jessica) and Cynthia; and devoted grandmother to Cash and Nathaniel Mathieson. A fiercely passionate, loyal, and driven woman, Bonnie began her life as the oldest of seven siblings on a farm in Illinois and, at no point did her work ethic decline. She dedicated her life to science and research in the pursuit of helping others. Bonnie earned her undergraduate degree from The University of Illinois in 1967 and her PhD from Sloan-Kettering/Cornell University Medical School in 1975. She spent 43 years working for the National Institutes of Health and had very recently retired to spend more time with her grandchildren and explore the world around her. Bonnie's contributions to the AIDS research community will be felt for decades to come. Her published works number over 125 and her awards and honors, including 2003 Alumnus from Weil-Cornell Medical School, World Health Organization Review Board, and Gates Foundation Review Board, are countless. She will be remembered as a fierce warrior in the fight to develop a vaccine for AIDS and a force to be reckoned with. Bonnie's memorial service will be held from 10 a.m. until 2 p.m., Saturday, January 27, 2018, in the Woodend Sanctuary of the Audubon Naturalist Society, 8940 Jones Mill Road, Chevy Chase, MD. In lieu of flowers, her family asks that you make a donation in Bonnie's name to the Elizabeth Glaser Pediatric AIDS Foundation (https://secure.pedaids.org/page/contribute/end-pediatric-aids). The world is a demonstrably better place because Bonnie Mathieson was a part of it.

I am sure her family misses her constantly. I have said, and heard others say, "I wish I could reach out to Bonnie...she would know!" The enormity and uniqueness of her vibrant contributions to the HIV field are missed! We all enjoy the benefits of knowing and working with her and aspire to be as positively impactful.

We have lost an inspirational contributor to the HIV field. Her command of the literature and wise assessment of the field as she cataloged and contributed to its evolution will be dearly missed. She was such an open and reliable source of information and advice and always supportive and generous. She was a wonderful friend, mentor and colleague and a unique and impactful positive presence in the research community. We all share a deep sense of grief at the loss of such a respected scientist and companionable friend.

Dear Bonnie and Family,
We are still stunned and saddened. It was always a joy to know you, admire your work, and enjoy our get-togethers all these years, from Stanford days to the Outer Banks with our families, to tumultuous days in the DC area. Dearest friend, RIP. Pat and Steve Brenner
