Diana P. Vargofcak  

Passed this day, January 9, 2019, after a long struggle with dementia. Diana is preceded in death by her parents, Augusta and Peter; a brother, Henry; a sister, Patricia (Patsy); and her beloved husband, Frank Vargofcak.
Diana, a 1943 graduate of Providence High School, won a full scholarship to Mundelein College. She graduated with a BA in math in 1947. She earned a cum laude Masters of Science degree in Math from De Paul University in 1952. Diana worked as a computer programmer, one of the first women to do so, at the Argonne National Lab in their Applied Math Division on digital programming. In 1975, Diana and Frank moved to Springfield, VA, was a long-time member of the Laurel Garden Club and was among the founding members of Nativity Catholic Church.
Diana will be forever remembered as a devout Catholic, gifted mathematician with a brilliant intellect, with an intense devotion to her beloved husband, Frankie. Diana is survived by her only child, Dr. Mary (Mardi) Vargocak-Apker (John), as well as a single grandchild, Keira, all of Northern Virginia.
The family will receive friends on Saturday, January 19 at 10 a.m. at Demaine Funeral Home, 5308 Backlick Rd., Springfield, VA. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Saturday, January 19 at 12 p.m. at Nativity Catholic Church, 6398 Nativity Lane, Burke, VA. Interment will follow at Fairfax Memorial Park on Monday, January 21 at 11:30 a.m.
