This is heartbreaking news that I'm so very sorry to hear. I met Don when he was VP of Marketing at Media General in Fairfax, VA. He remained for decades a wonderful industry colleague and friend. I am shocked at the news of his passing. It seems like mere weeks ago that we exchanged messages about getting together for lunch, as he was back in Santa Monica for a few weeks. Most recently, we had a fun lunch at the SoHo House in West Hollywood, revisiting old times but also talking about all the projects and ideas he had. He was very thoughtful, kind, and cheerful -- a lovely, soft spoken cable pioneer. He loved the industry and nominated me to the Cable TV Pioneers in 2008. I am so sorry to hear of this loss to his family, friends, and all of us in the cable industry. Deepest condolences to all.

I first met Don in the early 80s when he help me with (what else?) a cable programming deal. We remained good friends ever since and enjoyed working together. Don was great to just hang out with and I have wonderful memories of his recent visit to Los Angeles. I will miss him very much.

Don was my brother in law from his first marriage. He always treated me like a big brother giving me advise about dating, helping me with my college applications and even taught me how to ride a bike as a young adult. He was always so caring and helpful. My sincere condolences to his loved ones.

My sincerest condolences. Don was such a kind, professional, friendly, wise, compassionate man. I got to know him when he worked at NRTC. I loved his engaging stories and constant willingness to work well together. I'm so sorry to hear about your loss. He made a positive impact on me and so many people in the cable industry. His legacy will live on, you should be proud. My warmest regards, Meghan Ballantyne

Don and I enjoyed a lunch or beverage every so often in recent years. It was always the best part of that week. He was SO energetic and filled with new ideas. I can see his smile and know he is thinking of something new and exciting. We are all so fortunate to have known Don.

Good memories of Don in his MG years while I was at HBO. He was always prepared for meetings and negotiations and understood winning was a 2-way street. It was a pleasure to have known him.

My condolences to his family. We last spoke in November about working on a project together and I was so happy at the prospect of working with such a honorable, lovely man. I'm just heartbroken

Oh, my dear friend. Don will be missed by everyone who knew him - and he referred to everyone he ever met as his friend. I'm so very grateful we had some time together last spring. I'll carry his laughter in my heart.

I got to know Don first as a client and then he became a friend and mentor. Don introduced me to my future wife and I will always be thankful. My deepest condolences to the Mathison family...

I was Don's first wife for 27 years. We remained close friends even after we both re-married. He will be missed terribly. He had a heart of gold. I will always love you Don. R.I.P.
