DOUGLAS WHOLEY Obituary

DOUGLAS R. WHOLEY
Died on February 6, 2019. Doug was Professor Emeritus of Organizations and Management in the School of Public Health at the University of Minnesota researching health care organization and management. Born in California, he completed his PhD at UC Berkeley and worked at the University of Arizona, Carnegie Mellon University, and the University of Minnesota with a visiting professorship at the University of Manchester, England. The breadth and depth of his research was unparalleled; he was recognized for being rigorous in both theory as well as analytical methods in answering important questions. Doug co-founded the Health Care Organizations Conference, was published in top tier sociology, economics, healthcare and medical journals and was recently recognized with the 2017 Provan Distinguished Research Career Award. He loved to share his passions for cooking, gardening, hiking and history. He traveled widely for work and family vacations and always took a genuine interest in others. He was the beloved husband of Dori for 45 years; father of Anna Kalnow, Fiona and Will; proud grandfather; brother of Jim and step-brother of Cynthia Miller. His boisterous presence, sense of humor, smile and hugs will be greatly missed but remembered always. A private memorial service will be held on February 15th.

Doug, and his wife Dori, were the first two people I met when I moved to Tucson to join Gary Wagner, my now husband. They were, in essence my first friends. Doug was generous, funny and was one of Gary's main reasons for moving to Tucson originally,as they were colleagues in Berkeley. He holds a special place in both of our hearts.
