I have just learned of the death of my former boss, Ambassador Francis A. Dennis. I served as a Private Secretary to Ambassador Dennis in Abidjan, Ivory Coast in 1971 before his departure to open the Liberian Mission in Moscow. As a young girl straight from school, he was my mentor. He was a perfectionist and one of the best bosses I have ever had. My thoughts and prayers are with Mrs. Dennis and the rest of the family. May he rest in peace and may his memories forever live on.

October 5, 2008

Mrs. Dennis, Francis, Jr., Florence, Beryl, and, Baromi:

I was profoundly saddened when I heard about the passing of Ambassador Dennis.

Our families have been close since the late 70’s when Ambassador Dennis and my mother worked together at the embassy in Washington, D.C. I grew up with a strong admiration and profound respect for him. It was clear to me that he lived an honorable life guided by core principles. He was more than remarkable. An extraordinary representative of Christ, Family, and Country, Ambassador Dennis had admirable, respectable and consistent qualities. I will never forget his stately manner, his humble spirit, his genuine smile, his words of wisdom; his distinct signature voice…his walk of faith. He was a highly accomplished man who never became self-absorbed.

Together with his family, he celebrated our milestones and victories. He encouraged us to be the best compatriots we could be. He inspired us to ‘press toward the mark for the prize of the high calling of God in Christ Jesus’ (Philippians 3:13). He offered us words of comfort during times of sorrow.

Ambassador Francis A. Dennis, Sr. was a quintessential diplomat, and a true friend.

On behalf of the family of the late Nathaniel V. Massaquoi, I extend our deepest sympathy. We share in this tremendous loss. May God continue to guide your family and give you comfort. Today, and, in the difficult days which lie ahead, ‘be strong, and, of good courage’ (Joshua 1:9).

The light of Christ shines in the life of those who truly know Him. Cousin Francis knew Christ and the light could not be dimmed or hidden. It shone brightly for all to see. This family patriarch, honorable statesman, and friend has left behind a legacy of accomplishment and fulfillment. He loved people, he served his country, Liberia, and he lived for Christ. The Scriptures say "For me to live is Christ and to die is gain." He has gained his crown and heaven gained another star. Cousin Francis was a calming presence, stately and dignified. His kinsmen are saddened by his death but proud of his life. May his warmth, graciousness, friendliness, and gentle and loving nature be forever etched in our memory.

Florence Dennis-Huskin

October 1, 2008

As I reflected on my wonderful years with my father, the memories that surfaced first were ones of his total engagement as a family man with his immediate and extended family. Equally at ease with people from all walks of life, every strata of society, every cultural or religious traditition, he was first and foremost a man after God's own heart and his best role was that of Ambassador for Christ. He made Christ the center of our household so no matter which country we were assigned to in his role as a diplomat, he represented Christ first, then his nation and his family at large.

Through his exemplary life of service to God, nation and family, he modeled Jesus' indisputably inclusive ministry.

In my reflections below I will examine the all-inclusive Christ and see how we might model His work and attitudes, toward the goal of kingdom-building.

One writer, in addressing the inclusivity of Christ, acknowledged his crossing artificial boundaries of race, ethnicity, socioeconomic status, language and culture, and focuses on the concept of Christ as a representative "type" that appears in all facets of our lives - provider of manna, shepherd, Passover lamb, and the promised land, meaning that if invited to, He can permeate every single facet of our lives, providing a new dimension on reality, and a source of great hope and strength in the face of seemingly insurmountable difficulties or challenges.

Since we have been rooted in Christ, it must mean that he is as essential to our survival as is the earth, with its rich nutritional and regenerative properties. We should ask ourselves, have we taken posession of what is ours, the "Land?" In the scriptures we are told, "As ye have therefore received Christ Jesus the Lord, so walk ye in him." A writer explained it thus: "He is a sphere, a realm for us to walk in. He is not just some food or water, but a realm, a land within which we can walk. We must walk with Him. He is our land, He is our earth, He is our kingdom. Walk in Him." To be fully equipped for missions work or whatever is our individual purpose, we need both a knowledge of Christ and the fullness of Christ before we can ever attempt, as the Body of Christ, to go about His work or kingdom-building.

This vision is well expressed in parts of a hymn:

Oh, what a prize! Oh what gain!
Christ is the goal toward which I press
Nothing I treasure,nor aught desire,
But Christ of all-inclusiveness.
My hope, my glory, and my crown
Is Christ, the One of peerlessness.

Oh, what a breadth! Oh, what a length!
The Height, the depth unsearchable!
Christ the Lord is unlimited,
So vast, immense, immeasurable.
All that He is an all that He has
Is now our life unspeakable.

Like my beloved father, Francis A. Dennis, Sr. did all of his life, let us abide in the Vine to better learn the personality, not just the doctrine of Christ, follow His teachings, apply Him to everything, and become fully-realized Christians, enjoying our full inheritance from God--the all-inclusive Christ.
