HAYNES FRED E. HAYNES Major General, U.S. Marine Corps General Fred Haynes died March 25, 2010 in New York City. He was a veteran of the iconic battle of Iwo Jima in WWII and founder of the Iwo Jima Association of America. He served with the 28th Marine Regiment, 5th Marine Division on Iwo Jima - the same regiment that raised the now famous flag on Mt. Suribachi. This highly decorated Marine Corps General is survived by his wife, Bonnie Arnold Haynes; three children, Karen Francis Haynes, Fred Elmore Haynes and William Lane Haynes and stepdaughter, Alexandra Samantha Tramont. The funeral will be held in the Old Post Chapel, Ft. Myer, Arlington, VA on Thursday, July 22 at 1 p.m. A reception at the Sheraton National Hotel, 900 South Orme St., Arlington, VA 22204 will follow interment. The family has requested donations, in lieu of flowers, be sent to the Iwo Jima Association of America, PO BOX 680, Quantico, VA 22134.
