George Toney Obituary

TONEY GEORGE R. TONEY (Age 89) Died at his home on January 17, 2008, of lung cancer. Survivors include his wife, Sara, and his son, Stephen. Mr. Toney served as an interpreter in France and Belgium in World War II. He worked for the Weather Bureau in the Arctic after the war and later for the National Science Foundation in the Antarctic. He was head of Marie Byrd Station in Antarctica during the International Geophysical Year in 1957. Mount Toney in Marie Byrd Land is named in his honor. After 25 years with the federal government, Mr. Toney retired and entered the first class of the Antioch School of Law in Washington, DC. He subsequently spent 25 years working with juvenile delinquents through the Superior Court of DC before retiring again. A memorial service will be held at a later date at the River Road Unitarian Universalist Congregation, of which Mr. Toney had been a member for close to 50 years.
