Born July 13, 1920 in Vienna, Austria, Gertrude "Trudy" Marill Stanchfield, lived an astonishing 98 years before passing away on September 6, 2018 in her family home of over 60 years.Following the Nazi annexation of Austria, Trudy sailed on the Queen Mary to the United States in 1939. She arrived as a penniless refugee with no English skills but worked hard to attain the American Dream. A brilliant student, she attended Sweet Briar College on scholarship and graduated from Yale University with a Master's Degree in Psychology in 1944. She practiced for over 40 years, serving DC residents battling mental health issues. In 1949, she married Paul Stanchfield, and brought two sons, Edward and Eric, into the world. She adored her Tennyson Street neighborhood, developed enduring friendships and hosted an annual Valentine's Day party.During her extraordinary life, Trudy supported the arts, played classical piano and enjoyed opera, concerts, and theater. Trudy attended classes at American University into her nineties. She completed daily Post crosswords, walked the street, was an avid reader and enjoyed a Scotch in the gazebo in the evening.Trudy was preceded in death by Paul in 1971, Edward in 1975, and her sister Alice in 2016. She is survived by her son Eric, grandchildren Dharma, Paul and Alex, and great grandchildren Satori, Jake and Zach. She was a feisty, strong, witty, and generous woman with strong opinions. She will be missed, but her example lives on in all who knew and loved her. Eric and Family,

I happened on to the obituary for Trudy, and I was sad to discover she has passed away. Such a lovely woman. She hosted me once and so briefly, she probably didn't even recall me. But I remember her so well and so fondly. She was remarkable.

Has it been a year!!?? Time flies as you age. I was just looking at the postcard of the African American museum on the mall Trudy sent me a few years ago.

I first met Trudy 45 years ago when she visited her son, Eric, in Madison, WI. We had a kinship and understanding having both lived in Vienna. My father had also fled the Nazis, but from Czechoslovakia in 1940, arriving penniless is NYC and going to college, Baker U, on scholarship.
Trudy was always helpful and happy to share in my family's development. She babysat for our first child in 1980 after arranging for us to rent her neighbor's house for six weeks. She (& my father) attended that same child's Wedding in 2005! I have always respected Trudy as a fun, provocative and wise older woman. I will never forget her Valentines parties and love of piano !
