Died peacefully at her home surrounded by loved ones on Monday, January 23, 2017 at the age of 85. She was born in Quincy, Il the daughter of Joe and Ruth Best and attended Columbia College at Washington University in St Louis. Joan has proudly called DC home for 60 years. She was well known in her Cleveland Park Community and enjoyed her service to the Historical Society and the John Eaton PTA. Joan was a tireless and successful Realtor. She also threw her passion and energies for many years into working at Environmental Law Institute, National Wildlife Federation and Franklin Institute as conservation and sustainability have always being among her greatest concerns. She was a gifted artist who recently had several of her paintings on display at The Phillips Collection. Her friends and family will remember her dearly for her fierce intellect, gentle humor, wild New Year's Eve parties and vast culinary skills. She loved Great Danes, white flowers, polished rocks and the sound of the Cathedral bells and she had a smile that could light up a room. While her memory slowly began to fail her, her quick wit, warm heart and generous spirit never did. She is survived by her children, Joseph (Lori) and Leila Habib. She will be missed by her beloved dogs. Anyone wishing to honor her memory might consider a donation to Conservation Fund, Planned Parenthood or ACLU.
