Laura Lee Richardson, Ph.D.

Assistant Dean of Academic Affairs and the Director of Preclinical Education at Marshall University Joan C Edwards School of Medicine, died suddenly at her home on May 28, 2018. Laura was born in Washington, DC on November 22, 1950 to Laurence E. and Catharine G. Richardson. She began her education at the Stone Ridge School of the Sacred Heart in Bethesda, Md. Laura studied biology at Newton College of the Sacred Heart. She received her master's degree from the University of Virginia and her Ph.D. from Georgetown University. She did postdoctoral training at The Burnham Institute and the University of Tennessee before joining the faculty at Marshall. She received NIH funding for her research in the area of testicular cancer. Laura was a leader of the Anatomy Outreach Program that brought high school students to the labs at Marshall. The program helps attract minority students and students from rural West Virginia to the medical school. She was the director of the Human Gift Registry, a program that encourages donations of human bodies for medical student education. To honor donors and their families, she organized an annual memorial service. Laura was a huge music fan and an avid sailor. She is survived by her sister Amy of Vienna, VA; her brother James of Charlottesville, VA; and her brother Matthew of McLean, VA. Memorial services at Marshall and Stone Ridge will be held later this summer. Donations may be made to the Marshall University Joan C. Edwards School of Medicine (make checks payable to MU Foundation and send to Linda Holmes, 1600 Medical Center Drive #3400, Huntington, WV 25701); or to the Stone Ridge Fund, c/o Heather Dempsey, Stone Ridge School of the Sacred Heart, 9101 Rockville Pike, Bethesda, MD, 20814.
