LINDA WILLARD Obituary

Linda Zeller Willard (Age 81)
Died peacefully in her Washington, DC home on Wednesday, September 12, 2018. Linda was born in Philadelphia, PA to the late Albert and Ruth Zeller. She attended Swarthmore College where she earned her B.A. in chemistry and met her husband, Daniel. They had two sons and settled in the Washington, DC area where they lived for over 55 years. Linda was a first a Girl Scout, then an avid hiker (including much of the Appalachian Trail), and then a Cub Scout Den Mother. In their youth, Linda and Daniel sailed the Chesapeake, and in later years, visited many countries around the world. Linda earned a second B.A. in Business Administration and became a CPA. She later earned an M.B.A. from the University of Oklahoma and a law degree from Georgetown. She used her education to do pro bono work in both accounting and law. Linda worked for the Defense Contract Audit Agency for over 20 years. She started as a GS-7 and was proud to be the first woman GS-14 and later the first woman GS-15 at DCAA.Linda enjoyed playing bridge with women she met at the Kensington Co-op Nursery School when her boys were small. She played her last game the week before she died. She was a strong-minded woman, inheriting a love for the law and a good argument from her father. She had an amazing memory for poetry and lyrics, often turning favorite poems into dog-related parodies. Linda is survived by her husband of 60 years, Dr. Daniel Willard III; sons, Dan (Madelon) and Ted (Amy); four grandchildren, Ashley, Emily, T.J. and Jeremy; and sister, Susan Zeller Maxfield. A memorial service is planned for October 20, 2018 at Ingleside at Rock Creek where she lived.

Somehow I never knew that Linda was a Zeller! What I first learned about her, from her new husband, was that she was the smartest woman he ever met. And that was saying a lot! Dan's mother, whom we always called Aunt Mary, was one of the smartest women I have ever met.
