MARY DAWSON-KLEIN

Mary Dawson-Klein died on Tuesday, August 7, 2018, of ovarian cancer. She died the way she wished, at home with her wife and life partner of 37-1/2 years at her side. Mary was 70 years old. In the last three years of the terrible disease, Mary had advocated tirelessly for the right to decide, when there was no more hope left and only extreme pain lay ahead, to determine how her life ended. She leaves as a legacy the Death with Dignity Act in the District of Columbia. A journalist and visual and performing artist, Mary's work was informed by her profound humanity, intelligence and wit. She showed in New York City, London, Germany and nationwide. In retirement Mary trained dogs, bringing to it a belief in making lives happier for the dog and the owner. To each act of her life, she brought clarity and joy. To know Mary was an honor. She is survived by her wife Stella, and her two German Shepherds.

A private gathering was held with close family and friends. Donations may be made in her name to Compassion and Choices, the Nature Conservancy or Human Rights Campaign.
