On March 9, 2007, of Washington, DC, and Chicago, IL. Beloved wife of the late John D. Podesta, Sr.; beloved mother of Tony and his wife, Heather and John and his wife, Mary; beloved grandmother of Megan Rouse and her husband, Gordon, and Mae and Gabe Podesta; great-grandmother of Maribel and Gabriel Rouse. Also survived by her sister, Evelyn Carres and her husband, Spiro of Winchester, VA. Friends may call on Sunday, March 11 from 4 p.m. until 8 p.m. at JOSEPH GAWLERS SONS, 5130 Wisconsin Ave., NW. Funeral services will be held on Monday, March 12 at 1 p.m. at Holy Trinity Catholic Church, 36th and O Sts., NW. Interment will take place in Chicago, IL. In lieu of flowers or memorial donations, Mary asks that you spend time with your family which mattered to her most.

John, I am very sorry to hear of the death of your mother. I met her years ago at your house, and she struck me as being real ball of fire. I saw immediately that you inherited some of your most endearingly irreverant characteristics from her. How fortunate you are to have had such a lady to teach you about life. Mary opened her heart to so many people and I am so blessed to have been one of them. One of the highlights of my periodic visits to DC was visiting Mary and sitting in her kitchen discussing politics and world events and how proud she was of her family. She gave great advice to the love-lorn, always over a selection of scrumptious home-made baked goods. Mary was one of those people who transcended generations. Talking to her was always like confiding in a girlfriend. She was pure delight and will be greatly missed.

We will miss Mary's scrumptious and tasty pasta and chicken dishes, her concern for others, and, above all, her captivating smile and engaging laugh. It was a pleasure to know Mary from the early days on Kentucky Avenue on Chicago's Northwest Side through the time she moved to DC to be with her accomplished sons, Tony and John, and their families.
