MASSEY ANNABELLE GILLMAN MASSEY "Ann" Annabelle "Ann" Gillman Massey, 84, of Alexandria, Virginia, passed from earth to Heaven on Friday, August 24, 2018, after months of cancer therapy. She leaves behind many who greatly loved her, especially her husband of 64 years, Col. (Ret.) Oran Arthur (Art) Massey. She was born to Lester and Crystal Davidson Gillman in Wheaton, Missouri and grew up in Noel, Missouri, where her father was a history teacher, basketball coach and superintendent of schools and her mother was an elementary school teacher. Ann enrolled at Southwest Missouri State College in Springfield, Missouri at age 16, at a time when few women attended college. She was on the debate team, starred in numerous theatrical productions, was a cheerleader, runner-up for homecoming queen, president of Pi Kappa Sigma sorority, Sigma Tau fraternity "Rose Queen," and held other class offices. She graduated cum laude. At college, she met Art, the love of her life. They married just months after her graduation, at age 20. Throughout her adult, Ann's faith was her guiding light, and Art was her very best friend. Art became a U.S. Army officer and Ranger paratrooper, which meant assignments to places they never dreamed of living while they raised their three children. In 1975, Art's career brought him to the Pentagon, and they settled in the Mount Vernon area of Alexandria, VA. Ann, an English teacher in the past, worked as a civilian employee at the Pentagon and the U.S. Army Military Personnel Center, and eventually held the position of Team Chief for the Enlisted Personnel Division until her retirement in 1995. During her adult life, Ann enjoyed reading, writing, genealogy, and sailing the Chesapeake with Art for 20 years! She was a member of the Daughters of the American Revolution and an active member of Aldersgate United Methodist Church of Alexandria ~ on the altar guild, serving in the United Methodist Women's group, the Esther Circle, the Church visitation team, and a longtime member of the Intercessory Prayer Group. In addition to Art, she leaves behind their three children ~ Jan Massey Esher, Susan Massey, David Massey (Cathy), and two grandchildren who brought her great delight ~ Kyle Massey and Elissa (Elli) Esher. She also leaves behind her brother and his wife, David and Donna Gillman, a sister-in-law, Jimmie Gayle Massey, and nieces, nephews, grand-nieces and grand-nephews. A memorial service will be held at Aldersgate United Methodist Church, 1301 Collingwood Road Alexandria, VA 22308, on Friday, September 21, 1 p.m., reception to follow.
