Michael Anthony Valente
On June 7, 2021, Michael A. Valente, beloved son and brother, passed away at age 62. Born on June 12, 1959, to St. Clair B. Valente and the late Anthony F. Valente, Jr., Michael lived his entire life in Ashton and Sandy Spring, Maryland. He attended Saint Peter's school in Olney, Maryland, and was a 1977 graduate of Our Lady of Good Counsel High School. He later earned an Associate Degree in Fire Science from Montgomery College. Michael was passionate about serving his community, and was a member of the Sandy Spring Volunteer Fire Department for more than 45 years, joining as a Junior Member the very day he turned 16. He served in various active and administrative roles over the years, becoming a member of the Hazardous Materials Team in 1981, serving as President for five years, and also serving as Vice President and Secretary during his tenure. He served in every position from Fire Sergeant through Fire Captain, and was twice awarded the Department's highest honor, the Spencer J.H. Brown Sr. Outstanding Service Award, in 1989 and 2001. He achieved lifetime status in the Department in 1991. Michael enjoyed playing the pipe organ, which he studied for many years under the late Ray Brubacher. He loved listening to many types of music, and enjoyed smoking fine cigars, often gathering with friends for "smoke outs." He had a sharp wit, and a great sense of humor. Michael is survived by his mother, St. Clair Valente of Sandy Spring, sisters, Sarah Valente of Annapolis, and Kathryn (Brian) Montague of Darnestown, his nieces, Clair (Stephen) McGovern of Denver, Colorado, Brooke Kettler of New York, New York, and Emily Montague of Darnestown, as well as great-niece, Chloe McGovern of Denver, Colorado. A Funeral Mass will be held at 11 a.m. on Friday, June 18, 2021, at St. Peter's Catholic Church in Olney, Maryland, with a repast to follow at the Sandy Spring Volunteer Fire Department Station 4's Oak Room, in Sandy Spring, Maryland. In lieu of card or flowers, the family requests donations be made in Michael's name to the Sandy Spring Volunteer Fire Department.
