MONTE MILLER Obituary
MILLER Monte Baldwin Miller, MD Lt. General, USAF, MC (Ret.) Monte Baldwin Miller, loving husband of the late Christine Faye Vielguth Miller (deceased March 13, 2014), father of three children, and faithful brother of Marilyn Woods, passed away on October 28, 2015. He was born in Independence, Missouri on September 4, 1930. His father was a college professor and his mother, Francis Miller, was a school teacher and a woman who was a leader in her own right. Monte was an Eagle Scout, a tradition that he passed on to a son and grandson. He completed his undergraduate training and medical school at the University of Kansas, where he was later recognized as a distinguished alumnus, and began his medical career in a small town in Kansas. The needs of the Air Force called him into service, and he completed his residency training at Wilford Hall USAF Medical Center, the centennial Air Force hospital that he would later command. Dr. Miller completed a long and distinguished career in the United States Air Force, culminating in his service as the Surgeon General, with his life-long companion, Chris, at his side. He was awarded a chest full of medals and three stars but remained the humble country physician throughout his distinguished career. Upon his retirement, the couple moved to Winchester, Tennessee to an idyllic lake house that was a vacation paradise for his children and grandchildren for many years. Five years ago, they relocated to central Virginia, which they adopted as their new home. After his wife's passing, he became a prominent citizen at The Lodge at Old Trail in Crozet, Virginia and enjoyed the company of the fine residents who accepted him with open arms. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his devoted wife of over 60 years, Christine Miller. He is survived by three children, Mitchell Miller and his wife, Alisa, of Belleville Illinois, Dr. Mark Miller and his wife, Ann Etchison, of Crozet, Virginia, and Michelle Lantow, and her husband Brian, of Lake Oswego, Oregon; nine grandchildren, Mitch "Buddy" Miller, Michael Miller and his wife, Kirby, Matthew Miller and his wife, Lauren, Mason Miller, Melissa Miller, Paul Lantow, Sam Lantow, Kyle Lantow, and Joe Lantow; and loving sister, Marilyn Woods of Aurora, Kansas. He is also survived by two great grandchildren, Kyler and Grayson Miller, and his many friends at the Old Trail Lodge. Dr. Monte Miller was a tremendous teacher, leader, physician, General, father, grandfather, and great grandfather. His military career, as successful as it was, is only eclipsed by his love for his family. He will be sorely missed. The family plans to celebrate his life this spring.Dr. Monte Miller was a tremendous teacher, leader, physician, General, father, grandfather, and great grandfather.
