Passed away at his home on Tuesday, December 18, 2012. Born in Wichita, Kansas, Ralph served in the Army from 1942-46, landing on the beaches of Normandy on D-Day plus four. He met his wife, Elizabeth (Betty) Smith, at a Christmas Eve party in London while she was serving in the British Air Force (WAAF). Ralph earned his doctorate from the University of California, Berkeley in 1950; was a professor at Blue Mountain College, Middle State Tenn. College, and the University of Maryland; worked in government, including for the U.S. Department of Education; was a Lt. Colonel in the Army Reserve; and member of the Aldersgate United Methodist Church. Ralph is survived by his wife Betty of 65 years, sons Robert and Jonathan, daughter-in-law June, and two grandchildren. A Memorial Service will be held at Arlington National Cemetery in the near future.
