MERRICK, DR. ROSWELL DAVENPORT

On January 24, 2004 of Weems, VA formerly of Mt. Vernon, VA. Beloved husband of Gladys Kinley Merrick; father of Gregory Roswell Merrick, Cape Canaveral, FL, Susan Warren Nessell, Alexandria, VA, and Peter Dumont Merrick, Kilmarnock, VA. Also surviving grandchildren Peter Ross Merrick, James Richard Merrick and Mollie Elizabeth Merrick; brother Howard Bernard Merrick, Hamilton Square, NJ.

Dr. Merrick was a graduate of James Madison High School, Brooklyn, NY, Springfield College, New York University and Boston University. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army Air Force during World War II. Dr. Merrick taught and was a head basketball coach at Central Connecticut University, from 1953-1958 he was dean in the College of Education at Southern Illinois University. In 1958 he moved to the Washington, D.C. area as a representative of Southern Illinois University and to join the American Alliance of Health, Physical Education and Recreation as Vice President and then as Executive Director of the National Association of Sport and Physical Education until his retirement in 1990.

During his career, Dr. Merrick was President of the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics, member of the President's Council Physical Education and Sports, a representative to the United States Olympic Committee and a developer of the World university Games. He established the U.S. Fitness and Sports Council and has served as Executive Director since inception.

A memorial service will be held at Pohick Episcopal Church, Lorton, VA at a later date. Arrangements by CURRIE FUNERAL HOME, Kilmarnock, VA.
