William Louis Pfaehler  

Of LaPlata, Maryland, passed away on May 7, 2018, after a struggle with cancer. Bill was born on August 7, 1934, in Passaic, New Jersey, the first child of Raymond and Agnes Bristow Pfaehler. Bill grew up in Nutley, New Jersey, graduated from Nutley High School in 1952, and in 1956 received his Bachelor of Arts degree from Rutgers University, where he rowed crew and lettered. After serving as a First Lieutenant in the Army, Bill worked at Prudential Insurance Company of America in Nutley. In 1963 he left Prudential to join the Westfield, New Jersey Fire Department. In 1967 Bill accepted an appointment as a Senior Instructor at the University of Maryland Fire Service Extension, which later became the Maryland Fire and Rescue Institute. Bill remained a respected and popular instructor with MFRI until retirement. In retirement Bill indulged his passions for early jazz and model railroading. Bill is survived by his son, Andrew Pfaehler of Poulsbo, Washington, Andrew's wife, Colette and their son, Travis; his son, Kenneth Pfaehler of Rockville and Ken's fiancée, Maria Rico and her son, Dale; his former wife, Katharine Ann Seaman of Fishersville, Virginia; and his younger brother, Peter Pfaehler of Englewood, Florida and Peter's wife, Dianne. A celebration of Bill's life will be held at the Robert A. Pumphrey Funeral Home at 300 West Montgomery Avenue in Rockville on Monday, May 21, at 1 p.m. All who loved Bill are invited to attend.
