MURPHY Michael A. Murphy Michael A. Murphy, born May 14 1943, Bronx NY, died at home in Springfield, VA on February 5, 2018, after a long struggle with ALS. He is survived by his wife of 34 years, Ann Marie (Castagnaro) Murphy, his son, Michael A. Murphy, and his sister, Cecilia Baron. He was predeceased by his parents, Gerard J. Murphy and Nora (O'Keefe) Murphy and brothers Philip Murphy and Gerard Murphy. He graduated from Seton Hall University in 1965, having earned a NJ state scholarship. He was honored as a distinguished military student, elected president of the pre-legal society, selected to Who's Who of American Colleges, and was a member of the Pershing Rifles and Phi Kappa Theta fraternities. He graduated from Georgetown University Law Center in 1969 (JD) and in 1973 (LLM). He earned an academic scholarship and was selected to Georgetown Law Journal. After law school he became a Special Agent in the FBI, and was admitted to the NJ, DC, and VA state bars. After his service in the FBI, he worked for 10 years in private practice before starting his own law firm in 1982. He was later joined by his wife and son to form the Murphy Law Group and practiced until retiring in 2016. He served as a labor arbitrator with AAA and FMCS. He is a Past Grand Knight of the St. Bernadette chapter of the Knights of Columbus. He was player and head coach of the St. Bernadette Knights of Columbus softball team for 30 years. He pilgrimaged with his son three times on the Camino de Santiago in 2006, 2010, and 2013. His faith, serenity, and fortitude in the face of his illness inspired everyone he met. Michael's family will receive friends on Monday February 12 from 5:30 p.m. to 8 p.m. at Fairfax Memorial Funeral Home, 9902 Braddock Road, Fairfax, VA, and on Tuesday February 13 at St. Bernadette Catholic Church, 7600 Old Keene Mill Road, Springfield, VA, from 10:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. Mass of Christian Burial will be held at St. Bernadette at 11:30 a.m. on February 13. Inurnment is private at a later date. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that you consider a donation in Michael's name to the Robert Packard Center for ALS Research: C/O Fund for Johns Hopkins Medicine, 550 N.
