Husband, father and friend, passed away on August 5, 2003 after a short residency at Community Hospice of Northeast Florida, in Jacksonville, FL. A former resident of Falls Church, VA, he and his wife relocated to Jacksonville in 1995. Born in Barrow-in-Furness, England in 1927, he served in the Brittish Armed Forces during World War II as a mechanic. In 1954, Mr. Tweedale immigrated to the United States, the land of the automobile. Taking up residency in the Washington D.C. area with other family members, he acquired a position as an auto mechanic for Manhattan Auto, then located within the District of Columbia. He had worked for several other major foreign auto dealerships in the Washington, D.C. area as well as having his own business venture several times. From 1982 to 1995 he was owner/manager of Overseas Imports in Falls Church, VA, speciallizing in the car he loved, Jaguar. In 1955 Mr. Tweedale had begun his American racing career through the local chapter of the Sports Car Club of America. He was a Charter Life Member of the "Lavender Hill Mob" Racing Association, Washington D.C. Running under the G-Modified classification, he acquired many trophies throughout his racing career in such cars as Alfa Romeo, Elva and Lola. He frequented the courses at Upper Marlboro Motor Raceway and Cumberland Municial Airport in Maryland, Virginia International Raceway in Danville, VA, Sebring in Florida, Bridgehampton on Long Island in New York, Lime Rock in Connecticut, Watkins Glen in New York, Road America in Elkhart Lake, Wisconsin, plus others around the United States and England. He retired from racing in 1964. Mr. Tweedale is survived by his best friend and wife, Hazel (Schmidt) Tweedale; his daughter, Wendy Tweedale (Keith Bower) of Palatka, FL and an aunt, Doris Tweedale of Reston, VA. He also leaves behind many wonderful and dear friends as their paths have crossed throughout the years in business and personally. He cherished all of those friendships. Arthur is now once again in the Driver's Seat. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorials be made to the American Heart Association, the American Lung Association or Community Hospice of Northeast Florida, 4266 Sunbeam Road, Jacksonville, FL 32257.
