I discovered the sad news ironically while reading Jack's latest op-ed piece in the Wall Street Journal, which was published posthumously. I had the pleasure of working with Jack at the Federal Trade Commission during the 1980s. After losing contact with him for nearly two decades, I received an email from him out of the blue just days before he passed away with a nice message and a humorous article attached. What a pleasant surprise. As an economist and a man, Jack was like the late baseball star Duke Snider, someone who could hit them out of the park on a consistent basis while at the same time being one of the nicest persons you could ever meet. He was an extremely talented economist who contributed to public policy in ways that were both profound and counterintuitive. His works opened minds in ways that no one could expect. His loss is sad from both a personal and policy perspective.

I had no idea until now that Jack had died. He was one of the best economists I've ever known. His study, when he was at the FTC, of how FTC regulation in the 1950s prevented cigarette companies from advertising the harmful effects of cigarettes was a masterpiece in economic history and analysis. He was also a nice man. We testified together before an FDA panel in 1995.
