SHERYL GILBERT Obituary

SHERYL GILBERT
On June 25, 2012, Sheryl Gilbert died peacefully at home in Somerset, Chevy Chase, MD, of cancer. She leaves a husband, Peter Jaszi, and children Sabrina and Ned. Sheryl was a devoted neighbor and friend, an enthusiastic and successful gardener, an indefatigable volunteer for many causes, a world traveler and passionate birdwatcher, and an accomplished cook and hostess with Gallic panache. She was also a skilled and beloved mathematics tutor for both gifted/talented and learning disabled children - a second career for which she trained at American University and the Lab School of Washington. Previously she had worked as a conservation biologist at the National Zoological Park and the World Wildlife Fund. Sheryl's friends and family will gather to remember her on Thursday, July 26, at 4:30 p.m. on the 6th Floor of the Washington College of Law, 4801 Massachusetts Ave., NW, Washington, DC. Contributions in her memory be made to RICH (Resources for Inner-City Children), to establish a "Sheryl Gilbert Chair" for tutoring LD children in the organization's Saturday Academy, and/or to the Democratic Committee of Accomac County (Virginia), where Sheryl volunteered to help get out the vote in 2008. Information about RICH is at http://www.resourcesforinnercitychildren.org and the Accomac Democrats are at www.easternshoredemocrats.org/pages/accomac.html. Donors can indicate that gifts are in Sheryl's honor in the comment section of these groups' donation pages.

Dear Peter, Ned and Sabrina,
My heart is with your family as you say your final good byes to your dear Sheryl. I will remember Sheryl's spark. She was a wonderful listener and always had well thought out contributions to any conversation. She always seemed ready to smile and engaged in such direct eye contact that you knew your thoughts were valued by her too. I knew her as the loving and caring wife of Peter and mother to Ned and Sabrina and I admired the range of interests and activities that filled her life. I will hold dear the memory of Ned's 30th birthday and how delighted she was to celebrate that family event surrounded by friends. She seemed so very happy with that stage of family life and the future of her children. Ned and Sabrina are her gifts to the world. May you be a comfort to each other as you process all the emotion involved with the loss of your dear Sheryl. Much love, Marcy Forrest
