RICHARD SHEEHY Obituary

SHEEHY RICHARD F. SHEEHY (Age 84) Native Washingtonian, accomplished local artist and Eastern Market shopkeeper, Richard F. Sheehy died Monday, February 3, 2014. Mr. Sheehy moved to 7th Street SE in 1967. After the violence of the 1968 riots, Mr. Sheehy established "The Frame Up", a framing store and art gallery. Mr. Sheehy received an architectural degree from Catholic University in 1955. He was a prolific painter, specializing in oils and water colors. Locally, his art was featured on the cover of the Hill Rag more than ten times. He played piano and guitar, and was fluent in both French and ASL. In 1998, Mr. Sheehy purchased a summer property in Dagsboro, DE and as a result became a regular at Rehoboth Beach. He became involved with the distinguished Rehoboth Art League and was a featured artist of theirs on more than one occasion. He was proud to have been awarded 1st and 2nd place honors at their Henlopen Acres event. Above all things, Dick Sheehy most loved being at home, upstairs from the Frame Up or relaxing on the porch with his dogs, Cocoa and Vita. His front porch has always offered a very unique vista of Capitol Hill. Nowhere else on the Hill can you find the comforts of home so closely pressed up against an endless stream of passing foot traffic. His home was simultaneously a sanctuary and his connection to the beating heart of Capitol Hill; the weekend flea market across the street, the nearby Metro station and Barracks Row. Here, Mr. Sheehy made many lifelong friends with his alarmingly quick wit and special perspective on everyday madness that is life. Mr. Sheehy frequently hosted lively dinners parties and get togethers for other early "Hill Pioneers". The Frame Up, with Mr. Sheehy at the helm, has been a Hill icon for more than four decades and both will be dearly missed. He is survived by his devoted brother, Vincent Sheehy III, his younger sisters, Mary Ann Kiley Shugars, Mary Jane Moffett, Maria Crellin and Giovanna Riley, his loving nieces, nephews and close friends. A memorial mass will be held on Friday, February 7, at 10 a.m. at St. Peter's on Capitol Hill, 313 2nd St. SE, Washington, DC 20003. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made in his honor to Whitman-Walker Health, 1701 14th St., NW, Washington, DC 20009 or The Washington Animal Rescue League, 71 Oglethorpe St., NW Washington, DC 20011.He is survived by his devoted brother, Vincent Sheehy III, his younger sisters, Mary Ann Kiley Shugars, Mary Jane Moffett, Maria Crellin and Giovanna Riley, his loving nieces, nephews and close friends. It seems unfair to lose a loved one at such a young and tender age. I am truly sorry for your loss. As the days and weeks pass, and as you return to life's routine, may you continue to feel comforted by the love and support of family and friends. Psalms 121 is a very comforting scriptural passage. Please accept my deepest sympathies.
