GEOGHEGAN WILLIAM A. GEOGHEGAN William Aloysius Geoghegan, on Saturday, January 17, 2015, peacefully at home in Bethesda, MD surrounded by family. Devoted husband to Mary Lou Geoghegan; loving father of Kathleen Frisbie of Canton, MA, Elizabeth Kistner (Elkin) of St. Louis, MO, Anne Gerrety (Joseph) of Bethesda, MD, and Mary Warley (Ted) of Walpole, MA; dear grandfather of Steven Spartin, Jr., Alexandra and Thomas Frisbie, Maggie, Bill and Charlie Kistner, and Madeline and Charlie Warley; beloved brother of Margaret Mary Adams and brother-in-law of Robert and Carole Brown. He is also survived by many step children, grandchildren and great grandchildren. He is preceded in death by his late wife, Margaret "Peggy" Geoghegan, and his siblings Mary Virginia Vollmer, Jean Belden, Estelle Heekin and Thomas Geoghegan. Formerly from Cincinnati, OH, son of Thomas and Estelle Griffin Geoghegan, "Bill" attended Xavier University, graduated from the University of Cincinnati, and Harvard Law School. A WWII veteran, 94th Infantry and wounded survivor of The Battle of the Bulge. Purple Heart and Bronze Star recipient. He moved to Potomac, Maryland in 1961 with the Kennedy Administration as Assistant Deputy Attorney General in the Department of Justice reporting to Robert F. Kennedy and later Nicholas Katzenbach. He was very active in Civil Rights reform, legislation and legislative initiatives, nominations and confirmations. After government service, he was a partner in the law firms of Pierson, Ball & Dowd and then Reed Smith. He was appointed Special Counsel to Congressional Committees multiple times and he was appointed by President George H.W. Bush to serve as member of the Presidential Advisory Board on Cuba Broadcasting. He was active in the Order of Malta, Catholic Charities, L'Arch, SOAR!, and Board member and Trustee, Washington Legal Network. He was an active member of Burning Tree Club for 36 years and Congressional Country Club for 50 years. Memorial donations can be made in the name of William Geoghegan to Catholic Charities of the Archdiocese of Washington, 924 G Street, NW, Washington, DC 20001. Mass of Christian Burial will be at Our Lady of Mercy Catholic Church, 9200 Kentsdale Drive, Potomac, Maryland on Saturday, January 24, 2015 at 11 a.m. Family will receive friends from 10 a.m to 11 a.m. at the Church.
