CHARLES WOLF SLOAN  Born August 7, 1938
Chuck died at home in Vienna, VA on Tuesday, July 7, 2015 with Daphne, his dearly loved wife and companion in all adventures, at his side. He is survived by his four children, Mary Margaret (husband, Dr. Howard Krum), Charles, Jr. (wife, Dr. Mastidia K. Rutaihwa), Burton (wife, Melissa Tobin), and Susannah, plus five grandchildren, Julien, Andre, Romeo, Carambola and Esperanza. His family and friends will miss his twinkle and his certainty that every day would be a great day. Chuck was an attorney in Vienna for almost 50 years, and, when not hiking, playing the piano, or enjoying the National Symphony, he volunteered his time and legal expertise at more than a dozen local, national, and international non-profit organizations, including Appalachian Trail Conservancy, American Hiking Society, Potomac Appalachian Trail Club, and Joe Gibbs' Youth for Tomorrow. He founded and chaired the Boards of the Tanzania Education Fund and the Nianjema Medical Clinic, 107 Pleasant St., NW, Vienna, VA 22180, and so, in lieu of flowers, please consider donating to one of these two causes. Relatives and friends may call at the Sloan Home, 223 Walnut Lane NW, Vienna, VA 22180 on Friday, July 10 from 3 to 7 p.m. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at St. Mark Catholic Church, 9970 Vale Rd., Vienna, VA on Saturday, July 11 at 11 a.m. A Reception will immediately follow in the parish hall. Dear Sloan family, I have such fond memories of "Mr Sloan" from growing up! Always so kind to me and willing to have a real conversation with a youngster. I have happy memories of hiking with him and his endless knowledge of interesting topics. I know he will be missed by many. Much love to you all. Love, Beth Gratz Liechty
