Dr. Russell Glen Groshans  
February 14, 1929 - September 22, 2015Born in Minot, North Dakota, Dr. Groshans died of heart and renal failure in Rockville, Maryland. Dr. Groshans held M.S. and Ph.D. degrees in Physics from Georgetown University and was a graduate of the USMA, West Point, NY class of 1953. He served in the Air Force and the Office of Aerospace Research before joining corporate staff for RCA. He would go on to be Vice President of major companies Centel, Gould, Comsat, and American Satellite before he became Superintendent of the Space Science Division for NRL in Washington, DC. He retired in 1996, having served U.S. Government for 27 years. During his life Dr. Groshans made major contributions to physics, space exploration, and sciences. Much of his earlier satellite research paved the way for cable and broadcast companies. Many of his works are cited throughout publications, periodicals, and international symposiums with NOAA and NASA. He is noted by the government as instrumental in the development and success of the SSGM used in the Ballistic Missile Defense Organization and its predecessor, SDI. Dr. Russell Glen Groshans is survived by his beloved wife of 62 years, Barbara Mottley Groshans and their three children: daughters, Maris Groshans Frey and her husband Kenneth Frey, Barbara Groshans, and son, Nikolas Russell Groshans, as well as three grandchildren He will be dearly missed, as the world has lost one of its brighter lights who gave so much to us all. Private Funeral Services will be held.
