FARZIN SADEGHI Obituary

SADEGHI FARZIN SADEGHI ARCHITECT, ARTIST, ENGINEER & ENTREPRENEUR Farzin Sadegi, precious son, beloved husband, adored brother, revered uncle, gracious brother-in-law and son-in-law, respected colleague and generous friend passed away Saturday, October 17, 2015. A gentle, brilliant, compassionate, and generous man of good humor Farzin left a legacy of grace, strength and an abiding belief in the cardinal importance of education for overcoming differences and ignorance. He was in the midst of drawing up plans to start a foundation for providing scholarships for talented, deserving young men and women in Iran in the areas of engineering, in memory of his grandfather. Death interrupted. Persian by birth, Farzin was one of seven siblings. Proud of his rich heritage, he would come to lament the brutal political fanaticism that took hold in 1979. After graduating first in his class in engineering at the University of Tehran, Farzin joined with a number of avant-garde colleagues, who together would design and build the Tehran Museum of Contemporary Art. The Museum houses one of the most valuable collections of Western modern art outside of Europe and the United States. The 1979 Revolution forced Farzin to seek safety for his family. Only after he got his mother and siblings out and even helped with extended familial members did Farzin escape by car and foot via Pakistan. When he finally made it onto Air France and was offered a glass of wine by the stewardess, Farzin marveled at the complexities and raging crosscurrents of time and space: freedom now above and imprisonment below, the faces of humanity. It would be almost 18 months before he would be able to join his family in America. Everything he had worked for was seized by the new government. Guided by an unusual genius for business Farzin built and operated Potomac Homes in Montgomery County, Maryland, quickly making a comfortable living for himself and his family. He also met the love of his life, his Gigi, whom he would eventually marry and with whom he carried on a 26 year love affair until his passing. Kind and patient with the young he served as an inspiration to model. His precocious niece, Ashby Greer, astonished him by following his career into engineering. His beloved nephew, Arash, sought him out for philosophical discussions with an answer in sight, though there never were any. Farzin in turn was inspired by his blind nephew, Jordan, whom he thought saw and understand more of the world than most with sight. Farzin loved art, especially poetry and the visual arts. He painted for over ten years with a vibrancy and unexpected urgency for meaning where he sensed there was none, providing an outlet to the debilitating depression which plagued him most of his life. For hours Farzin read Persian poetry, especially Hafez, Sa'adi and Rumi. Farzin's own paintings reflected the spirituality he sought from the poets, a love of color and a new realm of consciousness. His paintings were juried and the subject of numerous showings and a VOA broadcast in 2013. Farzin comes from a close-knit, deeply devoted and loving family. He is survived by his precious mother, Zarintaj Alavi, three beloved sisters, Dr. Farideh Sadeghi, Farkhondeh Sadeghi, and Mrs. Firouzeh Wiedemer and steadfast brother, Farid Sadeghi. Many nieces and nephews survive, treasuring their uncle's kindness and goodness. And a wife, Gigi Hafner, who holds in her heart the memories of a life-time of shared love, laughter and sorrows; When time has stolen away our stars And only the night endures, Yet somewhere in the darkness Love, Your Hand will still seek mine. When death has danced its parting dance And tasted its last sweet wine, Yet somewhere in the Silence, Love, My Hand will still find yours. Many messages have been left for Farzin, and I am grateful for all of them. But I feel, in this journal, I would like to leave one message I had heard from Farzin:

"Farid, Shahryar was the one that I could ask for a favor, and he honored it" was what Farzin said more than once. So, as I have said many times; Shahryar jan, I owe it to you for so many times you have been there for my brothers. Thank you.
P.S. I feel this is a special place for me to let you know of that.

My dear Farzin;
As we sadly and rapidly approaching your second anniversary of your dramatic and tragic (and yet expected; as more recently realized) departure, my heart is slightly lightened by bringing you the news of one of the most important people in my life, (and you often shared the same feelings with me); Isabelle. She started her college on August 24, 2017. She paid a very sincere and heart felt respect on your memorial spot on Monocacy River before she departed. It was a moment of bonding and self reflect. I know how important it was for you to see your siblings and people you loved to succeed in life and for our family education was often an important accomplishment. I hope Isabelle will be able to make you proud, as she has made me VERY proud to be her father. All our love to you. We miss you dearly.

Please take care of each other as we make the journey toward you two. We love and miss you both dearly.

May both rest in peace.

So often, I have reached out to you, during morning hours, middle of the day, evening and before I go to sleep and then our journey together starts as thru out the night with vivid memories of you. Far past, closer past, current and even future!! How incredible our minds are, and yours was no exception, or was it? Yours was always in over drive, always busy, always creating, always protecting, always ,........
How I can get it to you, life has taken a different turn, somehow more challenging and definitely sadder, and more complicated.
Somehow it felt like you were able to smoothen things out, and now,....
Your memories are permanent as are the words in this book.Ever in pain brother's of you. (No need for name, there is only one left, and I miss all the ones that have been gone)

Dear Farzin , mr dearest one;
I am so deeply sad for loss of you.
Farzin was a truly special person to me and I will never forget the moments we shared.
Those we love remain with us for love itself lives on, and cherished memories never fade because a loved one's gone. Those we love can never be more that a thought apart. For as long there is a memory, they'll live on in our hearts.

Today was even more painful day than others. A year ago, today, you called me to say goodbye, and this time really you really did go!
The beauty of nature was what always draw you to it. Well, nature cooperated with your wish today on a glorious day, seeing the river with your particles. We had a very special person that had come from a long distance to show her respect and love to you as well. It was a wonderful bonding. I am in prayer and wishes of ever lasting peace for you.

Dear Farzin, my dear brother, my savior in my childhood and early adult life and my greatest teacher now.
It has been a long one year. I have had the whole 12 months to deal/struggle/accept not being able to see you any more. The whole last year passed by me building a new home for you in my heart. The whole past year was the practice of LOVE + attachment. Now I have realized that I better practice LOVE + non attachment,This way your soul will be at more peace and you will be in heaven where you belong .

September 5, 2016

Happy birthday my dearest brother.

Farzin, though you are physically gone, you are still among us, because you are one of the most kind, creative, imaginative, curious and gentle people we know. Your spirit abides in those of us who knew you. Be safe, gentle soul, in your next life. And Gigi, your life's love, we embrace you with our arms and our hearts. Love you so much, Gigi. We have missed you both so much these past months. Abrazos Eleanor Lewis

My heart goes out to Gigi and Farzin's family. Farzin's kindness, curiosity and knowledge singled him out as one of those few people we are privileged to know during a lifetime who are highlighted in our memories. He will always be a reminder that goodness and courage are enduring qualities despite the tragedies that life can burden us with.

Do not stand by my grave and weep.
I am not there, I do not sleep.
I am a thousand winds that blow.
I am the diamond glints on snow.
I am the sunlight on ripened grain .
I am the gentle autumn rain.
When you awake in the morning 's hush.
I am the swift uplifting rush.
Of quick birds in circled flight.
I am the soft star that shines at night.
Do not stand by my grave and cry.
I am not there, I did not die.
