JOHN ROBBINS Obituary

ROBBINS John Nelson Robbins, Jr. "Jay" 1938-2016 John (Jay) Robbins, teacher, public television pioneer, award winning producer, author and artist passed away on December 11, 2016, after a long illness. Jay was born in Greensboro, North Carolina on January 18, 1938. He earned a BA in Art and Music at East Carolina University, where he studied piano. He was an accomplished classical and jazz pianist, playing with jazz combos during summer breaks and vacations. Jay began his career as a fifth grade teacher at Forestville Elementary School in Prince George's County, Maryland and after three years was selected by the Greater Washington Educational Television Association (WETA) to be its Studio Teacher of Language Arts for elementary school students. Jay combined his love of books, music, art, and teaching with the power of television to create nationally-recognized programs for children. He was a pioneer in the field of educational programming for children, with a particular focus on promoting reading. Jay started with WETA in 1962. Over the course of his 26-year career with WETA, he worked as a producer and on-camera host of nationally recognized programs such as "Cover to Cover," "More Books from Cover to Cover," "Readit," "Storybound," and "Bookbird." These series introduced children to award-winning books through a format that involved narration from the text, accompanied by illustrations, some of which Jay completed on camera. The program always ended at a climax in the story, motivating children to read the book themselves to find out how the story ended. Some of Jay's other WETA series were "The Short Story," designed for high school students; "Portraits: The Americans," a biographical series that focused on famous Americans such as Benjamin Franklin, Benedict Arnold, John James Audubon, and Buffalo Bill; and "Across Cultures," which introduced children to different cultures and peoples, such as the Japanese, peoples of the Ivory Coast, and the remote Tarahumara Indians of Mexico. Jay also produced the Menotti opera, "The Old Maid and the Thief" for WETA. Jay was invited by elementary schools across the country to promote reading. On these visits, he encouraged children to use their imaginations to create stories of their own. As he listened to them, he would illustrate their stories. Jay was also a children's writer himself, authoring the very clever "The Tooth Fairy is Broke," which is still in print today. In the 1970's, Jay's public television series for children were rated in the top ten among all instructional television series broadcast nationally. They were fixtures of children's programming blocks on PBS for many years, and some can still be seen in the U.S. and Canada in syndication. In the course of his career, Jay was the recipient of numerous prestigious awards, including two National Educational Television Awards in 1966 for "Mr. Smith and Other Nonsense" (a poetry series) and "Cover to Cover," as well as a Producer's Lifetime Achievement Award in 1992 from the National Academy for School Television and Video. Jay received a Gold Hugo, the top prize in the Chicago International Film Festival, in 1975 for "Cover to Cover," and the annual Central Educational Television Award in 1984 for individual achievement. Jay received multiple Emmys, including The Glenn Brenner Award for Excellence in Broadcasting in 1997, and two National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences Awards for Outstanding Individual Achievement in 1970 for producing the ballet "The Unicorn, the Gorgon, and the Manticore" and in 1969-1970 for hosting "A Matter of Fiction." Jay was a lifelong birdwatcher and painted birds in the Audubon style, in addition to painting flowers of every kind. His paintings reflected his love of nature. Jay was a modest man of extraordinary talents. As Mrs. Elizabeth Campbell, founder of WETA, said of Jay, "He could play the piano. He could paint. He could talk. He loved young people and they loved him." Jay is survived by Paul Menszer, his loving partner of 39 years; loving sisters, Lynda Ruth Robbins and Carole Robbins Gregg; devoted nieces, Andrea Gregg (Amit Gupta), Christie Heslip, and Rachel Davis (Jason Davis); dear grand-nieces, Elianna and Olivia Davis and many devoted friends. A celebration of Jay's life will be announced at a later date. Thank you, Robbins for all the contributions you made to give kids like me some enjoyment when i was sick in bed. I remember fighting to keep my eyes open long enough to see your drawings come together with the stories you told. Sorry it took me so long.

I have just come across a signed framed print (1/2500) of the Carolina Wren given to my father in the 1974. Jay and my father, Robert D Smith, worked together at WETA beginning in 1962. I'm guessing the print was a farewell gift from Jay to my father when he left WETA in 1974 to head up WGTE in Toledo Ohio. I am preparing to donate the print to Assistance League of Charlotte to help fund their philanthropic programs for children and families in the Charlotte NC area. If a family member would prefer to have the print please contact me at [email protected]

My goodness. I've been searching for the name of the show and host of this marvelous PBS series we watched in our classroom in grammar school in the late 60's/early 70's and I have found that it's your dear, departed loved one, John Robbins. What joy this show brought me. I remember it so fondly. My sincere condolences on your loss in 2016 (same year I lost my mother). Thank you to Mr. Robbins for the wonderment he brought to books.

Dearest Jay - you continue to inspire me, challenge me, comfort me and show me love through my new appreciation of birds (we now live on a mountain in WV), painting (I´m learning!) and living life to the fullest and best. My love always to you - dear friend. (Photo from our trip to Mexico: you and George.)

I loved watching John Robbins when I was in elementary school. I am 49yrs old and still remember watching his program called book bird back in 2nd grade. He got me hooked on reading. I still watch some clips of his program on YouTube. Brings back memories of happiest times in my life in elementary school.

John Robbins had, perhaps, the greatest influence on my life other than that of my best teachers. I still hear his voice in my head, whenever I think of so many books he brought into my life. Books were my refuge.

He was a personal hero. I'm glad he had such a full and happy life.

I´m so sorry to see that John Robbins past away. I loved his work and remember watching Readit as a child. I´m now a professional artist and realize in retrospect that I was learning the art of illustration and the love of reading! I would love to share those episodes with my daughter. So inspiring! Thank you!

My first ah-ha moment in literature came in 1968 while in 3rd grade: we were able to watch the program, Cover to Cover. The book was Island of the Blue Dolphins. I was absolutely mesmerized. I am a visual learner and I do believe it woke me up to paying attention and learning for the first time in all of my schooling to that point. As a 59 year old, today I googled a description of what I remember and it lead me to John's obituary. I wish I had been able to say thank you to him before he passed. It is a cherished life-time memory.

I was his student in his first teaching assignment in Forestville Elementary School. He was a breath of fresh air to everyone especially to his students. Those of us who where blessed to be his students , we actually enjoyed going to school and we were the envy of all other kids in the entire school. We love his piano talent as well as the way he taught
American history where we would produce little skits and plays right in the classroom. We loved him. He was a kind and gentle soul and I doubt any of students will ever forget their fifth grade , 1959, class with the wonderful John
Robbins! I am personally very sad but heaven has the best of him now.

I was telling a friend about Mr. Robbins' story-reading TV show the other day: how relaxing it was, how my mother would take us to the library to checkout a book that he recommended. We read a lot of these books. As a 30 year-old man, I thought to myself "if he is still alive I should write Mr. Robbins a letter and thank him for his work and tell him how it impacted me." I was saddened to see that he passed away, but would like to express my gratitude for what he did to those surviving him. From reading a bit more about him, he seems like someone who used his abilities to make a difference in a kind, concerted manner.

Jay is indeed a renaissance man. A man of many talents and master of them all!
His calm, thoughtful, focused demeanor set the tone for manifesting excellence on every project we worked together. First, at Children's Television International where we produced The Short Story series and the Black American Folklore series. A few years later, we traveled together with his production company, Positive Image, to three distinctly different cultures to film a series called Across Cultures' starting with Copper Canyon a very remote region of northwestern Mexico to film the Tarahumara Indians, then to Japan to film both the traditional family and the modern' Japanese family, and finally to Africa/Ivory Coast to a remote village outside of Bouaké. I have added a few photos of those trips, but the memories are so rich, and ones I will always hold very close. Thank you, dear John Robbins, for giving me all this. I wasn't exclusive you have always been inclusive. You are missed, but your inspiration for excellence lives on! With love to the family, and especially Paul, Carole and Lynda.

Jay and Paul were a devoted couple who loved each other very much. Jay had poise and a quiet dignity. He was very empathetic and in my conversations with him I realized that he saw much, but said less. His natural reticence sprang from his sense of courtesy. He was a solid guy and a great partner for my cousin, Paul. They had a beautiful relationship for around 38 years, which ended too soon. We will support Paul with our love, but nothing will replace Jay.

Paul and Jay have been our very dear and special friends for decades. We have so enjoyed our times together and will miss Jay dearly. While we have greatly admired Jay's musical and artistic talents as well as his professional accomplishments, we have always especially valued his goodness, his calm and warm demeanor, his wry sense of humor, and his friendship. Our love goes out to Paul who has cared for Jay with such devotion these last 14 months as Jay has fought his illness so valiantly. Jay, may you rest in peace, forever in our hearts..

One of my fondest memories from Woodley Hills Elementary School in Alexandria was watching "Cover to Cover" with Mr. Robbins. Though I didn't read every one, I tried to look into every book I saw on the show. He introduced me to some classic children's and young adult literature. I feel as though I've lost a good friend.
