GUDGER SERETHA BLANCHE GUDGER Seretha Blanche Gudger was born in Washington, DC on December 11, 1928, the fourth of 10 children of Vernon Millage Gudger and Blanche Gudger. Life in the Gudger household for young Seretha was extremely hard; she left home at 11 years old and came under the care and protection of Annie Elizabeth "Ms. Annie" Blackwell. Under Miss Annie's care, Seretha went on to complete high school, graduating from Cardozo High School. In her early years, Seretha worked as a waitress and cook, before taking a job as a clerk with the United States Patent and Trademark Office in 1974. After 20 years of exemplary service, Seretha retired in 1994. At her retirement luncheon, everyone from the director of the agency on down showed up to say "goodbye" to "Momma," as she was known to all who came in contact with her. Seretha always walked straight up and proud, even as a child Ms. Annie would say, with an unassuming dignity. She was strong, kind, wise and humble. Anyone who took her kindness and humility for weakness did so at their own peril; early in life, she learned to be tough. She was compassionate and protective of others, especially those who could not protect themselves. She projected a maternal aura that enveloped many, and commanded the respect of the rest. Seretha Blanche Gudger joined the ancestors on January 26, 2017. She was a woman of God, and will be missed. She is survived by a sister, Louise; sons, Gary, Donnell, Gregory, Derwin, Anthony and Kenneth; son-in-law, Halbert; grandsons, Zachary, David, Anthony, Jr. and Halbert, Jr.; granddaughters, Imani Seretha, Adrianne Serita, Eboni Sagirah, Neysa Andrea and Tiffany; great-grandchildren Samari Nicole, Tawaan Lewis and Mya Lenae; and numerous nephews, nieces and their children. A memorial service for Seretha Blanche Gudger will take place on February 28, 2017, starting at 10 a.m. at New Bethel Baptist Church, 1739 9th Street, NW, Washington, DC.A memorial service for Seretha Blanche Gudger will take place on February 28, 2017, starting at 10 a.m. at New Bethel Baptist Church, 1739 9th Street, NW, Washington, DC.
