DAVID DeFOREST Obituary

DAVID FLYNN DeFOREST
Long-time Washington, DC radio personality and Voice of America announcer passed away in Arlington, VA on March 30, 2017, after a short battle with a rare and aggressive cancer. Dave's warm, baritone voice was familiar to thousands of easy music listeners at WGAY in Washington for over 15 years. Once WGAY changed its format, Dave became one of the voices of America, broadcasting U.S. news overseas. Dave was born to be on the radio. As a youngster, he built his own radio station in a closet in his bedroom, obtained a license to broadcast as the low-power station KWIC, and serenaded the neighborhood with the popular music of the day and his own programming. He also drafted his younger sisters to provide content with such shows as Debbie's Corner and The Wild Child. Dave moved into professional broadcasting in Bartlesville, OK, while he was a history major at the University of Tulsa, and worked at smaller stations in Tulsa and Beaver Falls, PA, before he found his major market radio home in Washington, DC.  Besides Dave's love of broadcasting, Dave was an active member of the Cherrydale Baptist Church in Arlington, VA. His thoroughly unflappable nature allowed him to teach Sunday school for the junior high crowd for over 20 years. Dave also bravely spent years as a middle and high school substitute teacher in the Fairfax and Arlington school systems. Dave is survived by his father, Sherwood S. DeForest of Tallahassee, FL; his sisters, Debra L. Granato of Oakton, VA, Denise M. DeForest of Denver, CO Kimberly A. Durrett of Tallahassee, FL. He also is survived by his niece, Danielle and nephew, Ryan Granato, both of Oakton, VA; and nephews, Christopher and Wayne Durrett of Tallahasse, FL. A memorial service will be held at Cherrydale Baptist Church, Sunday April 2 at 4 p.m. with a reception to follow. Donations, in lieu of flowers, may be made to Cherrydale Baptist designated to Youth Outreach.

"Relaxing music for Washington, you're listening to WGAY-M, Washington's easy-listening station. This is Dave DeForest. We'll be right back after these messages."
I hope the Lord is enjoying your relaxing music!
from a frequent listener and voice-imitator, while singing and announcing with the Army Chorus during the 80s and 90s.

From Costa Rica. I lost track about Mr Deforest when VOA left short wave heydays and later I enjoyed to hear him reading newscasts on TV cable. I felt saddened today Jan. 19 to learn my colleague has passed 4 years ago. Thankfully his voice remains recorded. Miss him.

So sorry to hear this. David was quiet in high school and in those eyes glowed the most sincere compassion ever.

As I mourn your passing, I must celebrate your life. Such a man of faith and integrity with a heart of gold. You fought the fight, you kept the faith. Now, rest in peace my friend.

Dave was one of the most pleasant people I have worked with in over 40 years of being in the broadcast business. He was, as the old Baptist hymn says "one of the dearest and best" ! I miss him deeply.
May the peace of God, that surpasses all understanding, comfort you all, family and friends.
Sincerely,
Jimi Cook

Dave,

You were a good and compassionate friend in good times and bad, from WGAY to VOA. A true gentleman and a gentle soul, kind to all you knew. May you rest in peace in God's grace.

I will miss you everyday. You were a very good and trusted friend for almost 40 years. And you were also a strong spiritual influence and inspiration in my life. Rest well with Jesus. You have earned it.

Dave was my colleague at the Voice of America... he was naturally kind, funny and smart. Beautiful voice and hardworking -- and always, always polite even under not the best circumstances. I think I speak for many of us at VOA when I say how much we miss you and will ALWAYS miss you. I lingered by your desk on Friday and tried to summon up your spirit... it's there, but we will never be the same without you brightening or calming our office.

Dave, you were as steady as they come. I will miss your always re-assuring voice. Seems it was just yesterday I saw you @ VOA.

I always wished that I could be as cool, calm and collected as Dave Deforest. It was such a pleasure working with him at VOA.

Dave,
You touched so many people in this world, locally as well as abroad. Every moment of your low key approach to life was guided by Jesus to Whom you devoted your life. You were a regular member of the Cherrydale Baptist Church, and shared your time, talent, means and love supporting its community. Lastly, you were a true gentleman in every sense of the word. RIP Dave, you earned it!
