PETER LEVIN Obituary

LEVIN PETER JAY LEVIN 4/28/1942~7/31/2017 Peter Levin of Chevy Chase, Maryland, died on July 31, 2017 after a brief illness. He is survived by his wife, Carol; his sons, Daniel and Jeremy, and his grandchildren, Linus and Ramona, along with many members of his extended family and cherished friends. He was predeceased by his brother Edward. Peter was born to Louis and Frances Levin (née Passen) on April 28, 1942 in Buffalo, NY. Following the premature death of his mother, Peter moved with his father to Washington, DC at age 8. While working multiple jobs to help support his family, Peter nonetheless excelled in school and received a full scholarship to Brown University, becoming the first member of his family to attend college. He then attended the University of Chicago Law School and upon graduation received two teaching and professional fellowships that took him to Buenos Aires, Argentina in 1967, soon after marrying Carol. Peter returned to Washington, DC in 1969 where he raised his two sons and spent 30 years as a litigator at Pierson Semmes & Bemis and its predecessor law firms. There, he and his partners tried multiple major, complex energy cases. At the firm, Peter was known especially for his superb analytical skills and legal writing, and his love of the law. In 2000, Peter joined two of his friends and former law partners at the Tobacco Project of the National Association of Attorneys General, where he later became Chief Counsel. At NAAG, he worked with state attorneys general around the country to coordinate the nationwide enforcement of the 1998 Master Settlement Agreement between 46 states and the major tobacco companies. He retired in 2013. Peter was devoted to his community as well, serving on the Board of the Jewish Council for the Aging of Greater Washington, and as President of the Board of the Jewish Foundation for Group Homes, among many other charitable activities both during his career and in retirement. Peter loved the theater, tennis, travel, and Washington's sports teams, and sharing in all of these pursuits with his friends and family. He also maintained a love of learning throughout his life, regularly reading, visiting museums, attending lectures, and taking classes, often with Carol. He was adored by his family for his kindness, wisdom, and humor, and for never being too busy to listen. Peter's memorial service will be held at 1:30 p.m. on Friday, August 4 at the Washington Hebrew Congregation in Northwest Washington, DC, with a graveside service to follow at King David Memorial Park. Contributions may be made to the Peter J. Levin memorial fund at the Jewish Foundation for Group Homes at jfgh.org or to another worthy organization.

Carol, Daniel, Jeremy and your family- We just learned of Peter's death. It is hard to fathom that his engaging personality, warmth, smile, and energy have passed on, but they persevere in our memories of him and no doubt in his legacy to each of you. As we evolved to spend more time in the DC area, we hoped to engage more with him and Carol, but now we still look forward to that time with you Carol. Our deepest sympathy and prayers are extended to you and your family. We believe life goes on after death and that the richness of Peter's life continues, here and in the hereafter.

I remember Peter as a good husband to Carol and father to his children. Peter was also an excellent lawyer, who tried to make the world a better and safer place. On the more personal side, Peter was a congenial and capable tennis player as well as a very pleasant and upbeat person. Peter, your legacy will live on, and you will not be forgotten.

Sending thoughts and prayers to Carol and family. I worked with Peter as part of the Tobacco Project for NAAG and always appreciated his thoughtfulness and attention to detail. He spoke fondly about dates with Carol in law school during one of our many trips to Chicago for the Tobacco Arbitration. Peter will truly be missed.

Carol and Family: Please accept our sincere and deep condolences. My relationship with Peter at PSC&F, as you may recall, extends back many decades. It is difficult to accept the loss of a wonderful colleague. You and the family are very much in our thoughts.

Peter was a leader of the class of 1960 at Northwood High School, where we met. It was wonderful to reconnect with him in 2010 at our 50th reunion. My condolences to his wife Carol and sons. He left us too soon.

Carol: Life throws some strange curve balls. It was just a few months ago we were talking about finding a couple in a sleeping bag in a Machu Picchu temple and how many more places in the world were left to see. Then this shocker. I am glad we got to spend those three days together around our Law School 50th to refresh our memories as to what a great guy Peter was, and what a great wife he has. Our deepest condolences.

I am sorry for your loss. May his spirit serve as a source of strength and joy for his family. I did not have the pleasure of knowing him but can see his legacy of passion, intellect, justice, art and caring live on his son Daniel.
May his neshama have an aliyah.

Peter was a Trustee of the Jewish Council for the Aging and a former Officer of the Board. His calm demeanor, can-do attitude and gentle sense of humor made many JCA meetings (and many JCA decisions) far better than they otherwise would have been. As JCA's chief executive officer, I am honored to have worked with and to have learned from him.
