DAVID STRUEWING Obituary

STRUEWING DAVID PAUL STRUEWING Of Takoma Park, MD and Cave Junction, OR died suddenly on August 16, 2017 at age 24. David was loved by virtually everyone who ever met him. In a very disarming and almost charming way he could win you over with his smile and warm personality. He was compassionate about social issues and did not shy away from debate on a wide range of important topics. He was born and raised in Takoma Park, MD and excelled in the Waldorf educational environment through 8th grade. He graduated from the Communication Arts Program of Montgomery Blair High School and was a computer science major at Temple University where his programming final exams were judged to be "works of art". David was a complex, multi-talented person who mastered almost anything he set out to do, including artistic pursuits, piano, videography, and circus arts like trapeze. He began early and matured greatly in acting with Lumina Studio Theater where he had many leading roles. He was a tinkerer who loved new challenges, everything from keeping a cell phone or laptop going for years to auto repair. His Halloween and Christmas light displays were legendary in the neighborhood. David had a great sense of humor and his laugh was like a hug. David was a true friend to so many people and you were lucky if you were one of them. David worked throughout high school, college, and beyond, including at numerous restaurants where owners would routinely come out to meet his family to say how wonderful a worker and person he was. Most recently he worked as an EMT in Oregon, which seemed to really suit him. Just before his death he was excited to relay his plans to continue working as an EMT, complete his computer science degree, and then apply this experience and knowledge to improving the emergency services system. In Oregon, one of his favorite activities was swimming in the crystal-clear mountain rivers. It was while swimming at a favorite spot that he developed a seizure and was unable to be resuscitated, despite heroic efforts from his friend and a helicopter evacuation. David is survived by his sister, Eleanor Struewing; his parents, Paula Wolyniec and Jeff Struewing; his nana, Amelia (Dolly) Wolyniec of Takoma Park, MD; his grandma and grandpa, Sylvia Jean Struewing and Herman (Ham) Struewing of Batesville, IN; numerous aunts, uncles, and cousins, and of course, many friends who loved him dearly. A memorial service will be held in the fall. Dear family, I was David´s ninth grade English teacher in CAP. I remember that David had never used a Scantron for a multiple choice test because he came from the Montessori school that didn´t administer such Tests. He thought the bubbling in the correct answers was very cool. Hi, on the other hand, thought that he Was cool for being unfamiliar with such things. Remembering David makes me smile. Love, Dana Simel

Paula, Jeff & Ellie- There is a space in my heart for David that belongs just to him. I loved the creative time we spent together - his inviting nature, his multi-talents, his support of the children at Yoga Arts Camp was complete and deep. I cannot express in words how devastated I feel and can only imagine the loss and grief you are experiencing. What a true treasure of a person and we feel so fortunate to have had him in our lives. All of our love, Laura, Lee, Fiona & Ella

Having just learned about David's passing, I'm at a complete loss for words. Paula, Ellie, Jeff, my heart is with you at this time. David was so creative and curious, so in love with learning, it was downright moving to behold him in action. He was a brilliant, and often hilarious performer as a teenager, and I always felt blessed to be his drama teacher. May his memory be of comfort to you, and may his joyful spirit live and inspire us always.

I am so deeply saddened to learn of David's passing. He was a remarkable young man in so many ways, and it is clear that he made a lasting impression on so many who knew and loved him. It was an honor to be one of his teachers in high school, and he was no doubt one of my all time favorite students. Peace be with you, and may the beautiful memories of him be of comfort.

David was a special person to so many in Takoma Park, lighting up the stage in every Lumina production he was in. I will never forget the Lumina carpools, with David in the center of all the kids, bringing laughter and joy to everyone. A star just went out over Takoma Park, and we mourn with you. --The Goldvale Family

I can still picture David in my 9th grade CAP English class. He was wicked smart, kind, and beautifully close with Gardy and Benson (the fourth Waldorf boy escapes me). David had a genius level social IQ. He made everyone around him happy. I keep thinking how unfair this is to his family, friends, and the world. He was destined for greatness. He was destined to make the lives of others better for having crossed his path. My heartfelt condolences to Ellie, Paula, and Jeff.
