CHLOE STIFEL Obituary

STIFEL CHLOE ANN MacDONALD STIFEL Died peacefully on August 17, 2017. She was born July 27, 1922 in Philadelphia, the daughter of John Emmet MacDonald and Frances McCann MacDonald. Her father was the official recorder of Admiral Richard E. Byrd's expeditions to Antarctica for the U.S. Department of the Interior. As a child, Chloe and her family lived in Spring Lake, NJ and Kew Gardens, NY. She graduated from the Kew-Forest School in Forest Hills, NY. During World War II, she served as a hostess at the Washington Stage Door Canteen, as a red cross volunteer and a civil defense air raid warden. Following her marriage to Richard Pugh Stifel in 1943, Chloe focused on raising their five children and pursuing many volunteer activities. She served on the Women's Committee of the Corcoran Gallery of Art, as a board member of the Sulgrave Club in Washington, and was a member of Chevy Chase Club for over fifty years. A knowledgeable gardener, Chloe was a founding member of the Perennial Garden Club, for which she served as horticulture chair for many years. Chloe strived for perfection in everything she did from painting portraits to singing solos in the St. David's Episcopal Church choir. She also designed and hand needlepointed the kneelers for the church. Her reputation as a portrait painter was known not only among her friends in Washington but across the country, and she had over 100 commissions before she stopped painting in the mid-1960's. She was able to capture the personality of her subjects in a unique impressionistic style that made her portraits highly sought after. With her husband, Chloe enjoyed collecting American Antiques, American Folk Art and early American Flags. Their home was featured in Southern Accents magazine in 1988. Traveling to Italy with friends in the summer became a new adventure after her husband died in 1990. More than anything, however, she enjoyed spending time with her family and friends and her beloved pets. Her infectious optimism and delightful laughter will be remembered by her family and friends for years to come. Chloe was predeceased by her husband, Richard P. Stifel; one son, Quentin Robert Stifel; her daughter, Dana Stifel Kiplinger and son-in-law Todd L. Kiplinger. She is survived by three sons, Richard P. Stifel, Jr. (Lida Matheson Stifel) of Darnestown, MD, Christopher D. Stifel (Patricia Thornton) of Brookville, MD, and Peter A. Stifel (Nan Smith Stifel) of Bethesda, MD. She also is survived by a daughter-in-law, Karen Stifel of Key West, FL, eight grandchildren, and 13 great-grandchildren. A memorial service will take place Saturday, September 9 at 11 a.m. at St. David's Episcopal Church, 5150 Macomb St., NW, Washington, DC, 20016. In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts may be made to St. David's Episcopal Church (www.stdavidsdc.org), or to Humane Rescue Alliance (www.humanerescuealliance.org).A memorial service will take place Saturday, September 9 at 11 a.m. at St. David's Episcopal Church, 5150 Macomb St., NW, Washington, DC, 20016.
