HAROLD EVANS Obituary

Harold R. Evans  Chevy Chase, MD  (Age 100)
On Monday, August 27, 2018. Beloved husband of the late Lilyan Evans; loving father of Geoffrey Evans and Randy Evans (and wife, Vicki); grandfather of Sawyer Evans, Bailey Evans and Brandon Evans. Born as WWI ended, raised in the Bronx, NY, he earned a degree in accounting from George Washington University in 1948. Upon graduation, Mr. Evans started his own CPA practice in Arlington, VA. He ended his 50-year career as a Partner at Grant Thornton. Mr. Evans enjoyed serving and advising his clients, who came to rely on his wise counsel. His philanthropy and service on behalf of George Washington University and various Jewish organizations was extensive and led to his receiving the 2004 Chairman's Award from the Hebrew Home of Greater Washington, as well as other awards and recognition. He was an avid fire buff serving as a volunteer on the D.C. Fire Department's Canteen Unit, providing food and drinks to firefighters at multi-alarm fires. He was also a diehard Redskins fan. He led an admirable life and earned the respect and affection of all that knew him.  A celebration of his life is being held at Washington Hebrew Congregation, 3935 Macomb St NW, Washington, DC, on Wednesday, September 5 at 10 a.m. Contributions in his memory may be sent to the Jewish Social Services Agency (JSSA).

Harold Evans was a beloved Trustee of JCA -- the Jewish Council for the Aging of Greater Washington -- and a longtime supporter of its people and community service programs. And how he loved to joke with us! "You're the CEO," he'd say to me, "so you should at least be able to me if my JCA stocks have split yet!"

I remember him fondly not only by the many generous, selfless gifts he made and the jokes he told but also by the series of Redskins tickets he gave annually to staff, often (always?) with help from his son, Geoffrey. He thrilled at the thank-you notes that appreciative staff members sent him, and I told him that the raffle I conducted annually to give those tickets away made me a momentary hero at the agency. He once remarked that that's the way it should be, though it wouldn't hurt if your staff put a little money in the cards they sent me.

I mourn with his family and friends.
