Dear Broyhill family,

I want to express my most genuine sorrow over Mr. Broyhill's passing. What a fine and good man; always a true and helpful friend to my mom and dad from the time they met in 1947. The Congressman was held in the highest regard and respect by my family. He was the epitome of a Virginia Gentleman.

I have many wonderful memories of your husband and father. But most particularly, I remember his help in June of 1971, when my oldest son was born with a lung ailment that threatened to end his life. I was in the Va. Army Natl. Guard and, within days, scheduled to leave the area for two weeks of active duty.

Believe it or not, the Guard refused all of my pleas to reschedule my duty time so that I could remain with my son, who was in critical care, and with my hospitalized wife. In great desparation, I called Congressman Broyhill. Within one day, my duty time was rescheduled. I can't express how much Mr. Broyhill meant to my family at that heartrending time.

His passing is a terrible loss. I wish you the very fullest measure of God's blessings and comfort.

So sorry for the passing of a fine man who served his constituents so well. My parents always spoke admiringly of Mr. Broyhill. In our home, he was ranked up there with Harry Truman, and that is saying something.

When I was a boy living in Alexandria, Mr. Broyhill was our Congressman. My mother always told us kids "If you ever need help, you can bet Joel Broyhill will be there for you." After a time, my widowed mother was having difficulty with the IRS. She was in deep distress. She asked Congressman Broyhill for assistance. Of course, he came through and my mother's problem was alleviated shortly thereafter. She could only say to us "I told you so." Mr. Broyhill was a true servant of the people. He was a great man in times demanding but not recognizing greatness. My heartfelt sympathy to Mr. Broyhill's family. And I must say: How lucky you are to have had such a saintly person in your presence. R.I.P.

Although born in Baltimore, I was raised in Arlington, and have always considered it my home. In the late 60's, I was a young wife and mother, and wrote to Mr. Broyhill for his assistance in getting my Federal income tax refund that was long overdue. Within two weeks, I had my check, and have never forgotten the time and dedication he took on my behalf. He was a great asset to the Virginia people, and he will never be forgotten. My deepest sympathies to all of his family and friends. May he rest in eternal peace.

Mr. Broyhill was much admired and respected in Virginia. My parents both worked on many of his campaigns and my father, John Kilcullen, was his campaign manager at least once. I remember him as a kind and honest man, a gentleman and just a good guy. We will not see the likes of him again. May this wonderful man rest in peace and may you all be comforted in your time of sorrow.

Dear Broyhill Family:
I am sorrowed to learn of your loss. I was a "Young Republican" and new Arlington resident when I first met Joel in 1967. Not only was he a great Congressman and GOP leader, always willing to boost the Arlington YRs, the Arlington County GOP Committee, and our local candidates, but he was helpful to me on more than one occasion with personal matters.

Dear Jeanne and Joe:
No greater gift can a father give a child then a good name. I well remember the respect and affection people on the Hill had for your Dad. Folks just gushed with praise when his name was mentioned. We know that your loss is deep and that these days will be filled with sadness. But so many will celebrate a life of distinction - a man who made a difference - to his nation, his community, his friends and his family. No doubt, it was a wonderful life.

Our prayers are with you,
Rick and Pat Lazio

Shortly before the Watergate election in 1974, Joel and I rode together from the Capitol to a GOP womens luncheon in Arlington.
I had served in the Congress 2 years, Joel had served 22. We knew we were in trouble and the outcome wouldn't be pretty. Both of us lost, along with 50 other GOP members.I felt almost as bad about Joel losing as I did about my result. What a shame for Virginia and the Nation to lose his experience, his knowledge, and his influence. He was my mentor,my friend,my supporter(personally, politically, and financially). I will miss him greatly.
Best wishes to the entire family.

Dear Suzy,
We had known that Joel had served his country as soldier and as Congressman, that he was a loving father, and a deeply caring husband, but how wonderful to be reminded of his wit and his way with words by the wonderful quotes you provided. His remarkable achievements make his loss so much the harder to bear. Our hearts are with you.

We're so sorry to hear about the loss of your dad. While many celebrate his friendship and commitment to the community, it's his role as your father that has shaped our memory of him…truly a life well-lived. We hope his memories bring you joy and laughter as well as give you comfort during this difficult time.

I can tell the caliber of the father by the character of his daughter. I am a friend and colleague of Jane Anne Houser and want to express my deepest sympathies to her and to Congressman Broyhill's family. It is so sad to lose a loved one but I hope that Jane Anne and the family find comfort in knowing that the loss is shared with a community of people who held him in such high regard.

From 1960-63 I was privileged to work in his Congressional office and for many years after that on his campaigns. He made a true Virginian of me! He survived his lung surgery at that time and we were privileged to benefit from his wisdom, kindness, generosity and public service for these many years. Thank you Sir, and God Speed.

On behalf of the Arlington County Republican Committee, we are saddened by the loss of Congressman Broyhill. We are also grateful for his many years of friendship and service to our community, to our nation, and to our party here in Northern Virginia.

He touched many people, and his spirit lives on in countless ways.

Congressman Broyhill was a fellow W.W.II Veteran with my father and there friendship began with the American Legion. A great Patriot and an American, his 1972 bid for Congress was my first political campaign. I have great memories of his service to his constituents in the Northern Virginia area, and I will always think of him fondly when I pass his house. Martha Walls

My mother and father worked tirelessly in many of Mr. Broyhill's campaigns. I was a child for most of that time, but I remember him well as a wonderful man. He took time to speak to me, just a child admiring a man whom my parents obviously respected. I've never forgotten his kindness.

Meredith and Maureen,
You will likely remember me as one of your teachers at Tara Christian School. My deepest sympathies to both of you on the loss of your grandfather.

Whatever one's political persuasion, Virginians can spot a Great American a mile away, and my uncle Joel was one. In this time of soldiers returning from battle with serious, life-long health issues, he is a great example. He returned from Germany having suffered major hearing loss after a bomb exploded near his head at the Battle of the Bulge, and then managed to raise three kids, earn a good living and run for congress eleven times! He managed to remember everyone, and even in his last year came to my home with crisp $2 bills in his pocket just to give my small daughters a treat.
He will be missed by many, especially his family. My deepest condolences go out to Nancy, JaneAnn, Jeanne, Kimi, Suzy and the whole family.

My father, James T. Broyhill, served with his cousin Joel in Congress representing the 10th District of NC for many years. We enjoyed Christmas vacations in the 60s & early 70s together in Florida and shared a common family bond throughout these many years. All the many North Carolina Broyhills will miss him dearly.

I will always remember the night my father had the crane operator remove the biggest rock out of the creek and drive it down the street to place it on the front lawn of Mr. Broyhill's property. Wow, was he surprised in the morning!
We may have lost a man of good character, and style, but I find comfort in knowing that he will find his place in heaven. Go in Grace & Peace......

Mr. Broyhill was the last of a dying breed: Congressional Representatives who took excellent care of their constituents. I sent several letters to him during his term in office (some were a little pungent), but he always sent me a Christmas card from his "House by the side of the Road". He will be missed.

Joel Broyhill was a great man. His public record shows it, but more important than that was his generous spirit and infectious laugh. Joel, you have given us a special gift that will last forever. You showed us the meaning of sincerity, the beauty of true friendship and the importance of a sense of humor. Your spirit lives on in a million big and tiny ways. Enjoy your new world, Joel -- save us a place at the dance!
