Louise Picon Shimizu (Age 72)
Passed away Monday, April 27, 2020, surrounded by family at home. Survived by her loving husband, Masaharu, three sons, Edowa, Thomas and Ken, sister, Ellen Tucker, brother, William Picon and four grandchildren. Born July 5, 1947, in Arlington, VA, she was the daughter of the late Leon and Lucy Long Picon. Many years of her childhood were spent abroad, as her parents were stationed in England and Japan. Earning a B.A. in Japanese and Chinese from Georgetown University, she worked as lecturer of English in Japan and met her husband at IIST. The two spent 28 years between Tokyo and Washington DC before settling in North Bethesda, MD. Gifted in languages and passionate about community and childbirth, her career ranged from birth educator, translator and author of several titles in childbirth, co-author of the Japan Health Handbook, to World Bank Family Network coordinator. Her passion to help children lead her to work at the Aschiana Foundation - an organization that helps educate vulnerable children in Afghanistan. The family will hold a memorial service at a later date and suggests memorials take the form of contributions to www.aschiana-foundation.org

Louise saved my "life". When an unexpected C section negated all the lamaze learning...I called her.Louise! they did a C section..When I was told by the doctor..though it was not an emergency.he just wanted to get it over...I called Her. Louise! The doctor who was well known..wants to do a C section and I did not read that chapter. When I came woke up..there was Louise with the BOOK opened on her lap..to read to me about recovering from C Sections. More to say..So sad ..just decided at random to check up. So many women made friendship groups of the Lamaze Classes she held for us...Her good was gold and also I loved that she was related to Molly Picon. We ALL knew her from Fiddler on the Roof. I am back in Japan..settled her..any of her boys..and I knew about them..can contact me.

Oh Louise, How we loved when you would come to the Patient Library. So gracious and kind. How you would beam when your sons came to visit! You promised to teach me how to be a wonderful long-distance grandmother! I have not the least doubt that you were and I will miss your lessons. God bless your family! Our prayers and hearts with you. Marie Kaplan and the staff of the Patient Library

Louise was the epitome of goodness and grace. She brought calmness in the presence of chaos. She delighted in spending virtual playtime with her grandchildren. It was a privilege to know her. My deepest condolences to Masaharu and the rest of the family.

She was among the most brilliant and kindest people to share our table. She bridged the gap between the times when global communications took weeks via aerograms the family celebration of life long into Saturday night that was held over Zoom and included relatives from Europe, Australia and across North America. Raised in England, Japan and America, she was one of the first in our generation to be a true global person. Her elegance was an example to all in good times and bad. She will be missed.

We are going to miss my sister very much. She and I had our ups and downs, but always loved each other deeply. We are grateful she is no longer suffering. She put up a good fight, but is finally at peace. Love to all of the family. Here is a picture my brother, sister and me many moons ago.
