My condolences to Judy and the girls. (I remember you as girls. :-)) You may not remember me, but I had the privilege of working very closely with Hershel at his law firm for my first job out of law school back in 1975. He became one of my most important mentors, and I remember fondly his bringing me to your home for Shabbos dinner one Friday evening after a long day together in court.
After a few years at his firm, I desired to return to my hometown in Pittsburgh. Hershel was kind enough to connect me to his best friend from Harvard Law School who was the senior partner in a Pittsburgh firm. I ended up practicing at his friend's firm thanks to Hershel's introduction. However, like Hershel, in time I decided to leave the practice of law---in my case to become a legal academic, with a sojourn for a year as a graduate student at Yale Law School, but Hershel was understanding that I did not choose Harvard. :-) Whenever Hershel was speaking on biblical archeology at or near a university where I was teaching, I made it a point to stop by to see him.
What can I say but that he was a true MENSCH!
With sympathy,
Myron Grauer

Saddened that his retirement has been cut short in this manner.

Grateful for the many years of work he put into his popular publication, Biblical Archaeology Review. May it be a blessing to many future generations of historians.
