DOROTHY POLLACK KIRBY Dorothy Pollack Kirby, 100 years old, WWII army veteran, public health nurse, artist, wife, mother, grandmother and dear friend died peacefully at home of natural causes on March 30, 2021.Mrs. Kirby was born Dorothy Natalie Kabat in Sommerset Pennsylvania in 1920. She attended the Montefiore Hospital School of Nursing in Pittsburgh. Upon graduation in 1941, Dorothy enlisted in the Army. During WWII, she served as a nurse in Normandy, Paris, the Philippines and Japan, retiring with the rank of First Lieutenant in 1946. Dorothy was awarded numerous medals for her WWII service culminating with the French National Order of the Legion of Honour medal in 2016. Following her military service she earned a Masters degree in Public Health from the University of Pittsburgh. Dorothy began her career with the renowned pediatrician, Dr. Spock. In 1947 she married WWII veteran Harold Pollack with whom she had three children. Dorothy became a widow in 1968 shortly after starting to work as a public health nurse for the Washington, DC Welfare Department. In 1973, she married Dr. Edward C. Kirby MD, DC psychoanalyst, widower, and father of two sons.After retiring from public health at age 62, Dorothy became an accomplished artist and an enthusiastic supporter of the arts working as a docent at the Museum of American Art, The American Building Museum and the Renwick.Dorothy's husband, Edward C. Kirby, died in 2006. Dorothy was also preceded in death by her beloved stepson, Christian Kirby, her two brothers, Herbert and Robert Kabat and her sister-in-law, Sandy Kabat. She is survived by her children, Ina Herlitzka (Alan), Mark Kirby, Gwen Pollack (Thomas Schreier), Fred Pollack (Dorte Lindhardt); grandchildren, Sam, Halea, Arthur, Maya and Isaac. In her later years, Dorothy was cared for with great dedication and love by Anna Leiva, Primi Rubio and Flora Mamboyo.Dorothy will be remembered for her creativity, courage and spunk. A memorial service and shiva will be conducted by Temple Micah. Dorothy will be interred at Arlington National Cemetery at a future date.In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in Dorothy's name to the DC Statehood Coalition,
