Passed away on January 16, 2022 at Culpeper, VA Regional Medical Center after a long illness.Cassie was born on July 30, 1942 in Washington, DC, to the late Albert Mattera and Louise (nee Houchens) Mattera.Cassie was one of four siblings and is survived by her devoted sister Betty Brown (John) of Leesburg, VA and her brother Michael of West River, MD. She is preceded in death by her infant daughter Amanda in 1975, her husband David in 1999 and her brother Ralph (Gradye) in 2017. She is survived by many nieces and nephews, relatives and close friends.In her youth, Cassie was a unique, vibrant, talented and beautiful soul, who loved writing, music, the arts and her pets. She cherished her family and friends, and rarely missed an occasion to acknowledge them all with cards and letters on special occasions. Her handwriting skills were the envy of anyone who aspired to calligraphy. She made occasional trips to the casino to satisfy her taste for gaming, especially the slots. In many ways, Cassie was life imitating art.Although she spent most of her youth in the Washington, DC area, she moved to the Bay Area of San Francisco in 1968 and later to Las Vegas, NM. She moved to Orange, VA after her husband passed away. One could say that Cassie was a flower child of sorts in the late 60s and loved the west coast, its beautiful people and surroundings.While the last few years have not been kind to Cassie due to her health, she always kept her spirits high, her faith intact and tried her best to be independent and a burden to no one.
