Dr. Kertscher was a native of Rockville Centre, N.Y., where he was a graduate of Chaminade High School. He studied biology at Villanova University and received a Doctorate of Dental Surgery from NYU Dental School. Dr. Kertscher served for more than a decade as a dentist in the U.S. Navy and Naval Reserves. In 1964 he set up private practice in the heart of Fairfax City, retiring in 2012 after 50 years of active practice. Everyone who knew "Dr. K." knew that serving his loyal patients was his lifelong passion. His dedication to his dental practice was rivaled only by his devotion to his wife, Nancy and their family. He was an avid history buff and a lifelong swimmer who loved the summer more than any other season. Survivors include his wife, Nancy; four children, Kathryn Teague of Austin, Texas, Kevin Kertscher and his wife, Kate of Dartmouth, Mass., Andrew Kertscher of Bradford, Vt., and Thomas Kertscher and his wife, Kim of Gainesville, Va. Dr. Kertscher was blessed with seven grandchildren that he adored, Haley Catherine Teague, Caroline Elizabeth Teague, John Hyland Kertscher, Audrey Elizabeth Kertscher, Andrew Bennett Kertscher, Alexis Kaitlyn Kertscher, and Ryan Aiden Kertscher; and nieces and nephews, whom he loved dearly, Debbie Rapka, Bruce, Ed, and Jack Field, Wendy Colling, Robin Reiswig, and William, Matt, and Kyle Evans. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. on Tuesday, June 26 at Covenant Funeral Service, Fredericksburg. A Mass of Christian burial will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Wednesday, June 27 at St. Patrick Catholic Church in Fredericksburg, with a reception to follow at the family's home. Interment will be private at Woodlawn Cemetery in New York. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Rappahannock YMCA Therapeutic Parkinson's Program.
