Matl, Frances H. "Fran'
Frances H. "Fran" Matl, 90, Shullsburg, WI, passed away Sunday, February 3, 2013, at her home. She was born January 8, 1923, in Athens, WI, the daughter of Louis and Pearl (Sterr) Stuempfl. Fran graduated from Wausau High School in 1941. She was united in marriage to Elmer Sefton on January 21, 1942, in Wausau, WI. Fran lived in Wausau until moving to Milwaukee, WI, in 1951. She worked as a secretary in a number of Federal Government Agencies in the Milwaukee area. Fran was united in marriage to Glenn Matl on November 3, 1973, in Madison, WI. In 1973, she moved to Shullsburg, where she worked for the 1980 Census. Fran and Glenn indexed a number of documents over the years, such as, the Lafayette County births, marriages, deaths, cemeteries, and probates, and Green County tombstone records.
Fran is survived by her husband, Glenn at home; four children, Marlene (Kenneth) Kaja of Milwaukee; Rosemarie Sefton of Huntington, WV; Robert (Susan) Sefton of Raleigh, NC; and William (Donna) Sefton of Blue Mounds, WI; 11 grandchildren, Timothy, David, and Donald Kaja, Rustin and Jeffrey Alexander, Christy and Scott Sefton, Jean Leard, and Aaron, Justin, and Laura Sefton; 12 great-grandchildren: one great-great-grandchild; two brothers, William (Jean) Stuempfl of Milwaukee; and Reinhart "Dick" Stuempfl of Phoenix, AZ; and two sisters, Rose Buth of Milwaukee; and Marlen (Ron) Fosse of Twin Cities, MN. She was preceded in death by her parents; her first husband, Elmer; one grandson, Michael Kaja; three brothers, Louis, Benedict, and Frank Stuempfl; three sisters, Theresa Gribowski, Mary Stillman, and Cecelia Stuempfl in infancy; and one nephew, Thomas Stuempfl.
Fran was a member of Centenary United Methodist Church in Shullsburg, past president and charter member of Lafayette County Historical Society and Badger Historical Society, and lifelong member of Wisconsin Genealogical Society. She enjoyed quilting, listening to music, and writing and reading poetry. She also enjoyed playing the guitar and mandolin and giving lessons.
Funeral services will be held Monday, February 18, 2013, at 10 a.m. at Centenary United Methodist Church, 226 West Church Street in Shullsburg, with Rev. Jeffrey A. Meyer officiating. Burial will be in Evergreen Cemetery in Shullsburg, at a later date. A visitation will be held Sunday, February 17, 2013, from 1 p.m. until 5 p.m. at O'Flahrity-Erickson Funeral Home, 235 North Judgement Street in Shullsburg and Monday, February 18, 2013, from 9 a.m. until the time of service at the church.
